Jyak & Lym is a great new place for Peranakan/Nyonya cuisine (which is basically a fusion of different cuisines found throughout south and southeast Asia) that is near the Salae Daeng BTS/Lumphini Park. It's a four floor restaurant with main dining on the third floor and a cocktail bar located on the 4th floor and the rooftop. The decor is intentionally eclectic - chairs, tables, even the upholstery on the bench seating were selected and placed so as to create a fun and harmonious balance - which helps to set it apart from the more standardized and somewhat boring designs of other restaurants (this may of course speak to personal bias, or perhaps to childhood trauma and chain restaurants, but such is taste). I went on a date here and ordered five dishes (see pictures). The Chicken Satay was perfectly cooked - my usual experience with these kinds of skewers is that they are either dry or tough or overcooked - these were not. (And I know what constitutes properly cooked chicken - many are the birds that have died for my somewhat repetitive bodybuilder kind of diet). Pie Tee are these perfectly excellent thin, crisp pastry cups filled with stir fried meat, carrots and turnips. It came with a non-spicy chili garnish. Absolutely recommend. My favorite main dish was the Duck Egg Char Koay Teow, and it's their most popular seller. I think the easiest way to conceptualize it is as a variant of pad Thai in that a lot of the underlying elements and textures are the same, but the flavors are quite distinctly different. My date particularly enjoyed the Nyonya Nasi Goreng (rice and shrimp dish) - to the point where he tried to convince me that I should just let him have that... Our final dish was the Beef Rendang. I have a particular fondness for anything with a coconut base and I liked the (from an American mindset anyway) Christmassy spices (cinnamon, star anise, cloves) that were used in the sauce. I will say that across the board, none of the food felt greasy or heavy. It was all really beautifully prepared and a pleasure to eat. It was also served in a very timely manner and not weirdly staggered - things came out when they were supposed to come out and came out quickly. I will definitely be going back and am looking forward to trying everything...

The Peranakan dishes we indulged in were an explosion of flavors that left our taste buds dancing with joy. The chicken satay was a highlight, surpassing even those served onboard Singapore Airlines – a true testament to its excellence! Each bite was tender, succulent, and bursting with rich, aromatic spices.
I opted for the Nasi Goreng, and it was nothing short of perfection.
