As an American living Istanbul, Geyik is by far the best social gathering place in the city. It is not a tourist destination by all means, only local Turks and other ex-pats will come and enjoy drinks at its simple atmosphere. You can sit inside or start a conversation outside on the sidewalk. Rain or snow doesn't stop the locals from enjoying themselves. I have found that speaking Turkish isn't necessary, the bar staff speaks English and most Turks who come out, also speak English. Geyık is an institution. Many Istanbulians know of it even if they havent been. Basically its a hole in the wall speakeasy bar. Known for its cocktails and always has a cool cosmopolitan crowd of Turks and expats in this creative professionals area of Istanbul. Its a very small bar but the crowd usually just stand on the street with their drinks. Always great vibes. Have always met fun and interesting people there.
