We came here on the recommendation of a friend and also based on the strong reviews on google. The service was friendly. Even when our server made a mistake (forgetting one of our orders) he was very apologetic. The atmosphere was nice. Our food experience was mixed. We started off with a juice. I had the ginger and lemon juice and it was amazing. We also ordered three dishes. The awara spinach dish was quite tasty. This was our favorite dish. The Ghana peanut soup was fine, but there were a few issues. One was that we ordered the vegetarian version, but it came with chicken. We told the server (different person than who took our order) we ordered the vegetarian version and she responded that without the chicken it would only be the broth (as if she was wondering why someone would order it as a vegetarian option). Even though one of us was vegetarian we decided to not return the dish. The chicken was mostly bones with little meat and the broth was thin with little peanut flavor. It turned out the soup was the most expensive dish we ordered (UGX58,000), and the vegetarian version was the same price. Our bad for not looking at the price before we ordered, but we are still puzzled how just the peanut broth could be the same price as the chicken version. Maybe this is why our server questioned us when we said we ordered the vegetarian version. Our third dish was the tofu appetizer, which was so dry we couldn't eat more than a few bites. Overall I don't think we will recommend this...
Read moreI am giving Bight of Benin four stars because we were lucky enough to meet Linda, the new manager, and she was a delight. We had a really interesting conversation with her and it's clear she's very committed to running a good restaurant. I am new to West African food so I wanted to be adventurous (but I don't think I chose the right dishes). I loved the bright colours, and the spices but it seems I am not a fan of okra (okro) after all. It was a bit too gloopy so I didn't really know how to eat it without making a big mess! Definitely worth a revisit as there is an extensive menu that I would like to explore further. Portions are very generous (no way we could eat everything) but I did find it pricey. I paid 54k ugx for a main meal and two soda waters. Bight of Benin is located on the site of Mama Ashanti but has a new owner, revised menu and a whole new approach. There are numerous seating areas inside and outdoors. They even have a...
Read moreI visited the Bight of Benin restaurant with a collogue and we enjoyed the authentic African cuisine. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the chef was very welcoming.
The menu had a lot of options to choose from, including vegan and vegetarian dishes. I tried the FUFU and my friend the Pounded Yam. Everything was delicious and well seasoned. The restaurant also had a good selection of wines from South Africa and other countries.
The atmosphere was cozy and relaxed, with colorful decorations. It was not a fancy place, but rather a country style restaurant with a lot of charm.
I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to try something different and...
