Read moreI'm of Italian descent and I've spent years in Italy. I was always fascinated by the quality of Italian food I could get in East Africa. And part of this fascination was my handful of visits to Mediterraneo over the years. But that has changed. This place went from 4 to 5 stars, to barely a two. First off it moved. Has it been bought? New owners? No idea. Its close to where it used to be but the new place is similar to the old in appearance. But the first thing you notice is the parafin/kerosene smell which is everywhere. Instead of using candles at most tables they are burning lanterns with bad fuel. It was so noxious that numerous guests were trying to swap them out. Then, as you might know, Italy is about the bread. This bread showed up with butter (bad sign) instead of olive oil. And I can't even guess how old the bread was, but it was old. And to save it, it was toasted and softened with some cheap oil. Then came the ravioli dish. It is literally the first time I have ever seen in any restaurant ever where ravioli got left uneaten. They had no flavor. The sauce tasted like salt with cheap bottled sauce. And though the salad was made with nice ingredients it too lacked any sense of being italian. I would be willing to bet that no italians are involved in this place anymore. The lack of olive oil is striking. But to not use a nice olive oil in a salad is criminal. I'm writing this review partly out of curiosity as to find out what happened. Very sad state of affairs at what was once a stellar place. Any ideas anyone? My lungs are still choking on...
