Soul Food Cafe — Restaurant in Belfast

Not really sure what was going on today but it was our first time trying Soul Food Cafe and it was very disappointing. When we arrived we were informed there was no coffee and that fried eggs would take too long to include in the fry. Fair enough. I ordered a smoothie from the menu and was told the smoothies on the menu weren't available but the smoothies on the special menu were, so I ordered a smoothie from the specials menu and was told all smoothies were sold out for the day. It wasn't afternoon yet so was a bit surprised but no big deal so didn't think anything of it. After being there for 40 minutes and not receiving any food or update on our order, we started to wonder why people arriving after us were being served food of a similar nature but we weren't served any. For example a table of six people arrived a good while after us, were all served similar food items to what we ordered from the breakfast menu whilst we still waited. Two different parties managed to sit at that table, one after the other, eat and leave but we still weren't served. We enquired about our order and were told the docket was with the kitchen staff and it was busy. We tried to explain that we didn't mind waiting and understood busy times but couldn't understand why people arriving after us were continuing to receive similar orders to us. We didn't feel reassured that we would receive food any time soon. We weren't given any understanding as to why people arriving after us were being served the same type of items. We waited one hour on our breakfast order and at this point witnessed a table next to us, who had arrived after us, query why only one person at their table received food, had eaten it and they hadn't received any yet. At this stage, we heard them being informed that they would receive their food next. True to form, they received their food shortly after their query, yet there was no sign of us receiving our straightforward order of breakfast fry items after waiting 1 hour. I went to explain at the till that we felt we couldn't wait any longer as one of us had to return to work and the staff simply said it was embarrassing. At this point, a member of the kitchen staff was holding up order slips and shouting out something about customer orders from the kitchen. I only heard bits of what they were saying "anyone who has ordered on this list" or something to that effect, so I'm still none the wiser but it just added to the awkwardness and felt like they were annoyed at something or potentially me for raising the query. At this point, a male member of staff started to advise new customers to leave. I'm not sure what they were informed but they were being sent away so at least it was addressing the situation that they couldn't manage before then. I explained to him that we weren't annoyed by the 1 hour wait, rather it was not having any logical explanation why people were arriving after us and being served the same fry items we ordered. He said it was embarrassing and that he didn't work in the kitchen so wasn't sure of the reasoning why. We left the cafe 1 hour 5 minutes after arrival with no reassurance that we could access food. Been here for breakfast twice, first time was midweek and it was quiet, the fry was was amazing and the quality of ingredients fantastic and cooked fresh, I was looking forward to coming back.

Second visit was on a Saturday morning, it was busy, I ordered the same fry as my first visit. Unfortunately on this occasion I felt robbed, half of the breakfast seemed to have been cooked a while ago and kept warm, the scrambled egg was was dry and microwaved for far too long, the sausages were nowhere near the quality of the first visit and overall seemed to have got less food, the fry is not inexpensive.

I ate here a few years ago with friends and it was lovely. Ate there this morning and it wasn't nice at all. Had the veggie breakfast. The poached eggs were completely raw inside, whites running clear. Everything was very salty and generally lacked imagination. Coffee was ok and service was lacking.
