Our last meal of the year, shared with the ones we love! Verdict: Great food in quirky surroundings. Décor: 8/10 Food: 8/10 Service: 8/10 Overall: 8/10 Background: Indico opened their second venue in the Mailbox recently. The Mailbox restaurant is appointed in a more upmarket style and serves Indian Street Food favourites from an extensive menu. Food & Drink: We opted for the "Chef's Special Thali" with "Paneer Makhanwala" and "Punjabi Choley" options. We also ordered the "Malai Papri Chaat" and "Gol Gappa Bombs". We ordered "Masala Chais" initially upon arrival and two "Jaipur Passion" and "Tender Coconut Shake" mocktails with our main meals, all to share. Portion sizes were large and more than enough to satisfy our hunger of not having had a proper meal earlier in the day. All dishes were well cooked and tasty, aside from the Malai Palak (tasted bland) and Punjabi Choley (too spicy) mini-dishes within the main thali. Service: The service was very fast and efficient, at times a little too fast for comfort. We were seated promptly but asked almost straight away whether we were ready to order. Only when we were asked for the third time had we actually had the time to look through the menu. We wished we had asked for the Chaat accompaniments to be served before the Thali, as we found that everything was bought out within seconds of each other, leaving us a little overwhelmed as to which to eat first (hot/cold, mains/sides). The wait staff were very friendly and were more than happy to help out with suggestions or advice in dietary suitability. Decor: The restaurant is decorated with a sympathetic eye on both the upmarket vibe of the Mailbox and a "Street Food" theme; the walls decorated with beautiful Bollywood murals, but with comfortable and welll appointed seating and subdued lighting. Overall wonderful surroundings to spend a relaxed evening. Timing: We arrived at about 6pm; perhaps because of it being New Years Eve we did feel a little rushed throughout. We were politely told that the table was required back at around 8:30pm and given time to finish up and leave which was fine as we wanted to be home before...
Read moreThis is the worst Indian restaurant I have been to. Let me start with the only plus with Indico Mailbox which are the starter's, they were great and what any Indian customer (which my group was) would expect from any Indian cuisine, we as a group of 5 had enjoyed these very much, we ordered the Malai Papri Chaat, Gol Gappa Bombs, Aloo Tikki, Punjabi Samosa Chaat, Chilli Paneer, Punjabi Fish Pakora, and these set a high standard for the mains.
The drinks were Panda pop coke and lemonade, if we ask for coke it should be coke a cola or a line not the cheap stuff! The Bollywood Star Martini has Tabasco sauce in.... very Indian.
The Mains were a disaster, if these were desserts I would understand why everything was so sweet, why are these mains so sweet! Lamb Rogan Josh was sweet, Butter Chicken was sweet, Paneer was sweeter than Rolf Harris at a school playground, Daal and Palak were bland, and the joke was the Vegetable Biryani which was just a mouth full of mint, upon asking the Manager whether there was mint in this which was extremely overpowering, with a smug face she replied no there's no mint in this, while me and my group are sitting there with the freshest breath on the planet! the manager was not concerned at all about our disappointment with all the mains we ordered and was only concerned about the Balenciagas on her feet.
This visit to Indico was for a Birthday which was a shambles, the staff were more apologetic than the manager, not that we needed any apologies, but an apology from the right person lets us know how much the establishment appreciate their customers, the waitress we had was very professional and apologetic but that means nothing when the manager doesn't really care.
My advice is if you want some excellent Indian food just go to the local Indian mix grill place for some great Punjabi food, won't disappoint you more than this place. I give this place 1 star just for...
Read moreIndico Street Kitchen in Birmingham's Mailbox isn't your typical curry house. Forget beige walls and predictable menus. Here, you're transported to the vibrant streets of North India. Bollywood posters adorn the walls, quirky teapots decorate tables, and the atmosphere buzzes with a contagious energy.
The real star of the show, however, is the food. Indico celebrates Punjabi street food, offering a symphony of flavors and textures. Start your journey with a selection of Chaats. Move on to mains, and prepare to be impressed. The lamb rogan josh is a slow-cooked masterpiece. The lamb is melt-in-your-mouth tender, having bathed in a rich gravy infused with a complex blend of spices. It's a symphony of savory warmth with hints of smokiness and depth. But the magic doesn't stop there. Indico's accompaniments elevate the entire experience. The bhatura bread is light and fluffy, perfect for scooping up curries and soaking in every last drop of that delicious sauce. Every element on your plate feels thoughtfully crafted to complement the others, creating a truly cohesive and satisfying meal.
Indico Street Kitchen offers more than just food; it's an experience for your senses. The vibrant atmosphere, friendly service, and most importantly, the explosion of flavors in every dish, make it a must-visit for any Indian food lover in Birmingham.
