Me and the Mrs visited here after Bolton museum. We were looking for more things to do whilst in Bolton and found the Ye old man and scythe on Google. When we got to the pub straight away our first thought was "its old!" Love it! We went inside and was greeted by a very polite lady who worked behind the bar. We ordered a pint and was shown to a table due to the ongoing covid pandemic as social distancing is still being practiced. Whilst sipping me pint I was intrigued by just how old everything was! Bits and pieces from by gone eras still remained in the pub adding to its overall makeup. I spotted a guy dressed in some interesting attire and asked "do you work here pal?" He did and after half hour chat about the land mark in i found out a whole lot about its history. The original pub was built in 1150!! Burnt down twice in its existence and rebuilt! Was the last place an earl spent his last 2 hours alive before being beheaded right in front of the establishment! Keith moon, yes that Keith Moon sat on and broke the original chair the earl sat in before being relieved of his head and the place is very haunted with accounts from different patrons of a young girl in period clothing standing on the stairs of a very ominous looking out building just in the beer garden area!!! Many of the inns features are original, from the beams to the floor and some walls. Its an awesome place to visit and the lager was a good pint too! Very polite inn keepers and a nice...
Read moreWent to Bolton to see my girlfriend as she staring in Pantomine at the Albert Halls.. She was missing our dog so I decided to take him.. He’s a Shiipoo and extremely well behaved.. My Girlfriend googled dog friendly pubs in the area and this pub was listed.. We checked again on the phone and they said yes we are dog friendly.. We attended and AGAIN we checked.. The barman said yes on the stipulation that we use the ‘rooms’ on the side or the back.. So we elected to use one of the rooms.. We both had a drink and were having a lovely time.. At which point my girlfriend decided to take the dog out for a toilet break - when she was confronted by a drunk lady who introduced herself as the manager.. Well I say ‘Lady’ - she clearly missed her elocution lessons.. she very impolitely stated that neither the dog, My girlfriend, or our collective money were welcome at the establishment.. She stated that no dogs were welcome after 6pm (this was 620pm) - she berated the bar staff for this and both were dumbfounded as clearly this rule was not in existence.. Needless to say we all left.. I’m sure Bolton is a very friendly place but this woman let you down.. That’s a shame considering it’s my first time here.. But guys if your not from Bolton or a regular here, if you ever find yourself in Bolton don’t go here.. She is a mess, if she had politely asked us to leave we would have.. Manners cost nothing.. Our dog has...
Read moreYe Olde Man & Scythe is the oldest pub in Bolton and one of the ten oldest public houses in Britain. The earliest recorded mention of its name is in a charter from 1251, which means that it is over 770 years old. The oldest room in the pub contains a display including the original chair that the Earl of Derby supposedly sat on before being taken outside to be beheaded; its inscription reads "15th October 1651 In this chair James 7th Earl of Derby sat at the Man and Scythe Inn, Churchgate, Bolton immediately prior to his execution". The pub has been modernized over time, but the charm still remains. The staff were wonderful and the Real Ale was good condition. Highly recommended for a visit, if you are...
