Summerhaze Fish Bar — Restaurant in Brean

We checked the reviews before going here and they seemed okay. After spending a lovely day out we wanted to eat before our long journey home. My partner and I spent £19 on a large fish (cod) & chips with mushy peas and we had a can of pop each. We were very disappointed with the taste and small portion of chips - they didn't taste like 'chippy' chips at all, but the fish batter tasted horrendous, spoiling the overall taste of the fish. The batter tasted like the small donuts you buy covered in sugar, at the fair... it was dripping in grease and we wanted a savoury meal and not something sweet. Obviously we didn't eat it as the fish also tasted the same. 2 stars are for the peas and pop. Oddly, in this day and age, they only take cash, so we had to find a cash machine. Although, there was one across the road, we still found it a bit strange. The staff were friendly enough. I've not given a bad review about food, so yes, we were disappointed enough to let other potential customers know. Obviously we can't say what any of the other food tastes like, but unless you like your fish tasting of donuts, I would try something else. There was plenty of parking, but do not park there unless you buy from there as there are many large signs stating you will be clamped otherwise. Lovely succulent food served. Nice size portions for the portion size you've ordered. The staff are lovely, friendly and accommodating. There's sometimes a waiting time but I take into consideration the time of day as well as seasonal timings. We waited for about 15 mins so it wasn't too bad. The only (con) I have about this place is the fact it is cash only the closest 🏧 charges to withdraw so we found we had to drive elsewhere to get cash out. Visited the amazing beach and fancied a traditional seaside bite to eat ; chose Regular cod portion which was enormous and really fresh - not oily and the was batter light and crispy. Amazing fresh chips, and mushy peas perfect, as was the pickled egg and gherkins. Everything I ate was cooked in front of me there and then and ready within minutes - despite it being a busy lunchtime. Really nice lunch and thank you for the professional swift service.
