On the rare occasion we had time off, we decided to try a Sunday Lunch here. Sadly the food didn't live up to our expectations. Slow Roast Lamb means succulent, tender, moist flavoursome meat that melts in your mouth - Not tough dry inner soles that clearly hadn't been slow-roasted at all. We commented to the waitress in an amicable way that the meat was too tough and sinewy but clearly didn't filter back to the kitchen. Chocolate Bread & Butter pudding was dry, the white-sliced bread was still visible and on my second spoonful, I chewed on some cling film. Once again, the waitress was made aware which she said she'd make the kitchen aware. The bill arrived for the full amount with no gesture of reduction for such poor food. It's so frustrating when you don't have the time to eat out as often as you'd like due to family etc, on the rare occasion that you do, you'd wished you'd stayed at home and cooked a far better meal for a fraction of the price. This is basic cooking after all. The 'chef' could do with hopping OFF the gastro-pub bandwagon and being honest with themselves that they aren't quite cutting the biscuit in this league!!. Take heed those in search of good value AND quality food - THIS...
Read moreWe hired The Eldon House for our engagement party, and it was absolutely perfect. With 80 guests, the venue provided a fantastic atmosphere and catered us with a mix of bread, cheese, and charcuterie. Izzy was brilliant—so warm and welcoming—and she went above and beyond to make the evening special. She even gave us a free drink on arrival to congratulate us, which was such a lovely touch.
We were able to rearrange the space exactly how we wanted and brought our own party lights and used their PA system for the music. Although some locals were using the main bar initially, after about an hour, our guests filled the whole pub, creating an amazing vibe. Izzy was also incredibly accommodating—she let us drop off things early and kept them safe overnight so we could collect them the next day. We brought our own cake, which was no problem at all. Communication throughout the process was easy and no question was too small.
Everyone had a fantastic time, and it truly felt like a hidden gem for hosting a party. We wouldn’t hesitate to use The Eldon House again in the future. Highly...
Read moreWorst Sunday lunch I've ever experienced. Coupled with being underwhelming, tepid and overpriced we were rushed to finish our booked meal because they had a birthday bash booked for the same room and needed us to leave so they could continue removing all of the chairs and tables. (Yes!. They had started doing this during our meal). The landlords response (same landlord at the merchants arms, Hotwells) when spoken with about it was that "you can't please everyone."
Here's a suggestion.. don't double book your events room that you also use to serve food (we would happily have eaten in the main bar area but we were ushered into your back room) and make your patrons feel like they're somehow to blame, awkward or at fault. We were there due to a cancellation and recommendation from the legendary Rose of Denmark and foolishly expected a similar experience. The only similarity was the price. The landlord would do well to understand the true cost of something. I hope this review...
