Having worked for Michael in a previous venture I always know the food will be good. My partner and I were out celebrating your 10th Anniversary, we were only meant to be out for a few drinks but as so often happens the hours ticked by and our belly's starting grumbling. Town was very busy due to a gig at the Piece Hall. We went in to Ricci's place without a reservation knowing it was very unlikely we would find a table. The staff at the door were brilliant, we were welcomed with big smiles and told very clearly they can get us a table but we would only have 50 minutes before they need it back, and they advised to only have one course. This worked for us I liked how open and honest the team were. We ordered a beautiful bottle of organic Primativo which came within seconds and our order taken within a few minutes. I asked if we could order one of the "For The Table" dishes but not as a starter just to send when ready and no worries if the mains arrived whilst we had it. The waiter was fine with this and the Pesto Bruschetta arrived almost immediately. For mains we picked a classic Lasagne and a special mezze of hummus dips and Merguez Sausage. The tomato sauce on the lasagne is the best I have ever had. The depth of flavor was insane for something so simple as a tomato sauce. The mezze as also delicious and beautifully presented. About 4 for 5 minutes into our mains a waiter can to table check us and we said how happy we were with it all.
After about 45 minutes of being there we have had our lovely meal, polished off the bottle of wine and were able to ask for the bill.
The service was exactly what I would expect from this top notch place: professional, attentive without being overbearing, friendly and above all very welcoming. Like going to eat at your favorite aunties house.
Thank you to all the lovely staff and a big shout out the the very hard working kitchen team who hardly got change to look up from their fast paced sections.
It will not be long before we are back. Though I will be booking a table next time. much love for this...
Read moreSo using your ‘ask-for-vegan-menu’, I ordered both your vegan options at 9.45am on Saturday morning, 10th July; ordering both so I was hoping that one would be the right choice.
The butter beans sat in a BBQ type strong smelling sauce, which could be heavily smelt by four people around me, as there was an acid/vinegar like smell from the dish. It made the sour dough bread soggy. I could not eat it so picked at the beans only.
The second dish which was put down beside it; the mushroom bagel course, I could not even attempt to eat, due the amount of oil the mushrooms had absorbed in the heating up process, the oil was sitting around the base of all the mushrooms. The bagel had absorbed a lot of the oil too. I'm pretty certain truffle oil should be used sparingly, as it is a delicate flavouring oil? This experience left me hungry all day, as we quickly left to a clay pigeon shooting area, until 3pm, which was not great on an empty stomach !
I had an amazing breakfast however the following morning in Halifax, consisting of wilted spinach, cannoli/kidney beans in a small contained pot (separated so not to make any bread soggy) , dry sour dough, grilled mushrooms and tomatoes, delicious grilled plant based pea-protein sausages, all at ‘The Temperance’, as super discovery. Only one chef in there, turning out good honest vegan along with a great menu. Please check it out, we don't ask for much.
Michael I have never rejected any vegan breakfast in the years I have made this lifestyle change – quite honestly it is not hard creating a healthy, appetising and simple...
Read moreWe've had excellent meals here in the past but were very disappointed in last night's experience. One of our party has a nut allergy so we always have a good look at descriptions and ingredients on menus. He ordered the monkfish which no mention at all of containing nuts, but when the plate arrived it was sprinkled with almonds. On seeing this, he explained that he couldn't eat it because of his allergy. The first words out of the waitress's mouth were "Well, you'll still have to pay for it", and she showed no empathy or understanding. We ended up swapping plates around so we all had something we could eat. The waitress went away and returned a moment later to say "Anyway, the sauce contains almonds too as it's a romesco sauce" before disappearing again. It boggles the mind that there was no mention of nuts on the description of this dish when other dishes listed possible allergens more clearly.
As for the rest of our dishes, we were left wondering if there had been a recent change of kitchen staff as none of the food was prepared with the usual finesse. The deep fried tuna on the fritto misto was bizarre and unpleasant, and the chilis in the seafood linguine were way too dominant. These two dishes were previously among our favourites at Ricci's but we're...
