If you're Pakistani / Indian / Bangladeshi, this place will disappoint you terribly. There was not a desi in sight when we went there and now we know why
Let's go through the good things first. The taste was okay. And they took 8 of us upstairs in a nice dining area which had a very nice vibe. That's about it.
Everything else was wrong. Firstly, the head manager who received us had a weird attitude. Some of the other reviews capture that already so let's move on. We ordered a bunch of different curries and 2 of us were unfortunate enough to order butter chicken. It was sweet. Not like it had a tinge of sweetness to it. It was actually sweet. So painfully sweet. It wasn't a curry that had sugar, it was a dessert that had curry powder. Basically inedible. The rest of the curries tasted fine but it was the same chicken in each curry. My best guess is that they have a bunch of chicken marinated and cooked already and depending on what the order is, they just cut it up, mix it in with the sauce and hallelujah. And then the lamb. I'm assuming the lamb was precooked in a similar way and was tough as rubber. Couldn't be broken even after digging nails into it. When we called the head waiter and complained, he argued back about how he had 35 years of experience and it was supposed to be like this. He then said if he should take it back and have it cooked some more??? Like that would make rubbery lamb tender. He took it back and replaced it with a random chicken curry. That was edible atleast. Also Raita. The raita we got was just a cup of yogurt with black seeds sprinkled on top. Nice.
TLDR: This place isn't for everyone. English people seem to enjoy whatever this place offers but I would highly encourage you to consider something else since the food and the overall experience leaves a lot...
Read moreThe food tasted very good on the whole. My starter of samosas was cold in the middle but piping hot on the outside. Seems that they didn't defrost the samosas before putting them in a deep fat fryer! Thank god I ordered veggie samosas. The waiters on the whole were good apart from their head waiter who was insistent that we ordered starters and main all at once so he could bring out all the food together. I don't think all this food would have fitted on such a small table that we were given. We told him we wanted to enyoy our starters before we started on our mains. He found this unacceptable and started harassing us to order our mains. We had booked a reservation for four and the place was two thirds empty which puzzled me why he was so interested into getting us in and out as quickly as he could...I said to my wife that the restaurant should be called 'curry in a hurry' and not curry queen! My friend had enough of his behaviour and broke the cardinal rule of criticising the waiter before the food came out. All he said was we just want to enjoy his food and that we shall call him when we wanted to order. He didn't take this too kindly I felt. To be honest, I wanted to go to a different restaurant for my mains at this point but I didn't want to insult my friend who had invited us for an evening get together at his old eating place. I let caution to the wind and stayed, praying the food would be safe from interference (I will leave it at that)! The mains did taste very nice which puzzled me why they would try to jeopardize the success of the business in such precarious economic times with bad attitude? Everything was reasonably priced and the nans were made perfectly. ie not too toughy! I wouldn't go back there to have a meal but I would order a takeaway from there but under a...
Read moreI have just visited the CQ with my wife for about the hundredth time, having been a regular customer for the past forty years. Both my wife and I are members of large Cambridge families who have entertained groups of up to twenty or more in your restaurant over the years. Tonight unfortunately, we felt as though we were cheated after we’d had another excellent meal and called for the bill. I studied the bill as I always do, which came to £68 plus pence, which seemed about right for the modest meal we’d had. I assumed service was included as the last item on the bill was labelled SEC £6.20 which I took to indicate ‘Service Charge’. Printed at the bottom of this bill was the line ‘Service charge is not included with the word ‘not’ very clearly crossed out. When your front of house waiter presented the card machine he asked me to present my card which jumped to a total of £80 literally as I presented the card. The machine and bill were quickly taken away and I was left in some state of shock that my long standing favourite curry house in Cambridge had suddenly cheated me. I have no receipt nor a copy of the bill to substantiate my claim, but I have to say that even to suddenly add £12 to my bill after service seemed already to have been charged leaves a very uncomfortable feeling. I doubt that we shall be returning to The Curry Queen unless you are able to somehow restore my faith in your integrity, and I would therefore reluctantly encourage friends and family in Cambridge to look elsewhere when wanting a curry too. Having read other recent reviews it is clear that my experience is not unusual.. (I sent this to the email service advertised on the CQ’s website but as I got no positive response I’m posting my...
