Lots of little things let down our visit.
The menu advertises the price of a large quesadilla as £7, we got charged £7.80. There was nothing anywhere mentioning the 10% increase in price / no break down on the receipt.
The menu advertises 3 tacos for £6, we were charged £6.30. There was nothing anywhere mentioning the 5% increase in price (other than the extra we paid for guacamole which we expected).
There is no fresh coriander or lime available for the tacos. When I asked for some, I was given a bit of a strange look and was informed that the only fresh coriander they have is already mixed into the rice, and that they don't give it out for tacos.
The tables upstairs had not been wiped down.
The quesadilla was soggy and limp with no ability to really hold it properly to eat it. The wet quesadilla was also placed on top of the tortilla chips, resulting in them losing a bit of crunch where they got moist / steamed under the hot food.
The 'crunchy' corn taco shells were almost like uncooked chewy leather. Really don't know how else to describe them. They didn't taste awful but their texture / lack of crunch or structure again made it difficult to actually pick them up.
I wasn't given a receipt initially and when I asked for one, it seemed like a lot of bother for the staff to do it. The first person I asked didn't know how to print them, and the second person who intervened didn't have the right swipe card and had to go and find a manager's one. When they did then bring me the receipt, they told me they had to look through "all the transactions" to find mine which is why it "took [them] so long". This again sort of felt like I was making them go out of their way just for a receipt; I hadn't said anything about how long it took (nor did I chase them for it).
The food itself tasted alright, just lacking acidity and fresh aromatics for my personal preferences.
Given how things had gone thus far, I didn't really want to attempt trying to query the prices / presentation of food. We weren't asked for feedback at any point and nothing was said to us as we left.
The place was quiet with 4 staff members on. 3 of them didn't seem bothered about being there / didn't have any energy, and the one who seemed to be a team leader was equally unenthused.
The combination of small issues and the atmosphere = 2 stars. I will revisit in a week or two to try it again as they could have been having an off day. My experience did not match my expectations from a high overall review score from others / the hype I've heard about the place.
Excellent location with bench seats upstairs overlooking the market place though. Salsa roja, verde and the guacamole...
Read moreI've been to 100's of Tortilla's over the UK and it will remain my No.1 Mexican joint despite this trip to Cambridge.
I was served by a new employee who was polite and enthusiastic but he was being watched over by the manager, a short lady with a short temper.
I asked for a large chicken burrito with a couple of peppers- one thing I love about Tortilla is that they're happy to throw on some peppers at no extra cost (unlike dry-as-hell Mi Cassa burritos).
The manager interjected and very rudely said it's £1.00 or so extra, I kindly asked since when did they start charging for peppers because it has never been previously charged. She became angry, ignored my question and said "it's a vegetarian option".
I let it slide as I could see the new employee was uncomfortable with her attitude and comment.. he actually only put TWO peppers into the burrito, probably scared for his life.
Moving on to the rest of my order, I could see the Pico de Gallo was running low so I said "ah there's not much pico so I'll have some verde as well please". The lady then sarcastically laughed and shouted "WE ACTUALLY HAVE A WHOLE FRIDGE FULL OF FOOD".
I could not believe my ears, I have never been spoken this way before by anyone at a restaurant, let alone Tortilla. I did not reply, paid for my overcharged peppers and quickly left- confused and upset.
I don't know if the manager was just having a bad day or not but I was determined to enjoy the deliciousness of Tortilla and ignore the bad taste that this woman had left...
Read moreThis is a large chain so my expectations were not huge but we'd just been in Taco Bell next door to check the menu and walked out as even the pictures on their menu looked depressing but I really fancied taco's so popped in to Tortilla and I have to say not only were they very tasty Tacos, they were actually one of the best I've had outside of LA & Mexico. The ingredients were so fresh and extremely tasty and unusually, I could get a Trio with three different meats. I will definitely be back but my only criticism is the style of restaurant but I guess it works for their profits so they won't change based on this review 🤣 I just think it's a shame I have to queue, Subway style to get better tacos than most sit down Mexican restaurants. It just feels a bit rushed and pressured when they're busy and there's no guarantee there's a seat even though you've chosen to dine...
