The Gurkha is an excellent restaurant serving Nepalese food which is similar to our understanding of Indian food So lots of rice which is beautifully cooked and presented Lots of mild spiced dishes to very hot dishes so something for everyones taste You can also easily enjoy a vegetarian meal which my daughter had The service is faultless and the pace of the service was spot on The staff were great but not over bearing Everything we had was very tasty and presented beautifully The surroundings of the restaurant are good lots of pictures on the wall of Nepal Gurkhas etc Pristine cutlery and linen and the table was plenty big enough and the chairs comfortable which was great because we were there for nearly 2 hours We visited in the week one evening The restaurant was fairly busy and had a lovely warm atmosphere We had a very enjoyable meal coupled with an enjoyable evening Portion sizes were excellent so be careful not to order too much .But if you do and cannot eat everything they are happy to box it up for you so you can take it away to eat later We thought that the restaurant was good value for money Excellent food good service good surroundings And if it matters to you the restaurant is very close to Chelmsford Railway station Chelmsford Bus Station and there are plenty of Taxi Cabs nearby as are there parking spaces Very close to the theatre and a couple of pubs Well worth a visit or you could plan a whole evening around The Gurkha We will...
Read moreVisited early on a Friday evening, around 6.15 and only one other table was occupied. I ordered the Lansun Piro Hari (venison) and my wife had the Kukhura Lababdar (chicken) We also had the tandoori roti, mushroom rice and onion bhaji. First impression was that the roti was thin and small and covered in oil/ghee/butter? The venison dish was a rather unfortunate shade of brown with a decent amount of venison in a LOT of sauce and the chicken dish had pieces of very pale chicken, not the vibrand red, with charred edges you'd expect of tandoori chicken. My wife said the chicken dish was only just warm with very little taste. Whereas mine was warm but had no taste! I'd ordered my alien-to-me dish based on the description; "Diced venison steak grilled in the clay oven, cooked in a unique style curry leaves, mustard seeds, Nepalese spices with a touch of coconut cream" so felt pretty disappointed. We've not been here for a few years and thought we'd give it another go but with such an uninspiring meal and with so many choices of restaurants in Chelmsford we won't...
Read moreWe ordered a takeaway at 7:30 and were told it would be delivered at 9, seemed a long time but we were willing to wait. At 9 o'clock our order was marked as delivered, but no sign of it. I called the restaurant and they said 'the kitchen was running behind' but that the food was just ready now and was going out for delivery so would be just a few more minutes. Half an hour later, still no food. I call again and I hear the phone click and get redirected as they screen my call. I call from a different number and they pick up immediately. Same response again 'it is just going out for delivery now'. I ask them to confirm and point out they said that half an hour ago, they said yes it was definitely in the car and on its way, just a few minutes away. 30 minutes later, still no food. I call from various numbers, every one of them is redirected to another line and an answering machine. By 10:30 I've given up, not only did they take my money and not deliver my food, but they lied to me continuously throughout the whole process. Worst...
