Visited this place last night after hearing a few good things only to encounter a colony of inauthentic, fragile, egomaniacs operating as a hive to create a shared delusion that the toneless caterwauls and embarrassingly naive lyrics being spewed forth by the lacklustre creature on stage could ever be even adjacent to folk music. The bartender made eye contact multiple times and chose to ignore me until, out of sheer defiance, I called him over to take my order - I then tipped him 15% because Iโ€™m not a monster - it was at this point a guitar wielding homunculus expressed his offence at my not being silent and paying absolute attention to the noise being proferred as entertainment - I almost regret responding with my own feedback as I left because I usually choose kindness but couldnโ€™t help expressing my disgust at experiencing artists that are boring, conceited AND proponents...

Appalling service by barmaid. Asked for ID for my partner (who is 32) to which she rudely looked her up and down - this made it uncomfortable to which we had to leave

Just like to add - after reading other reviews, itโ€™s quite clear that the staff here are pretentious and make non locals feel unwelcome. Would not recommend if your looking for a nice pint in Edinburgh.

Reply - I am aware that challenge 25 is a procedure throughout all establishments that sell alcohol in the UK. We have been ID before, and not been offended. This clearly shows that your barmaid went the wrong way about it.

We have never been made to feel unwelcome and so uncomfortable when asked for ID, that we had to leave.

Hopefully you address your extremely rude barmaid so this doesnโ€™t happen to someone else simply trying to explore the city during...

Absolute disgrace of an establishment. Lived in Edinburgh all my days and have never been asked by bar staff to quietly tone down my conversation. Catching up with an old friend I havenโ€™t seen in years takes me to his favourite bar and to be asked by the lady owner to be quiet so as the band can play songs. Lmao itโ€™s a pub not a library. My friend who prior to this labelled this as his favourite bar has now relegated to his worst!. Wasnโ€™t even being loud or disrespectful just have a little louder voice than most. Only go hear if youโ€™re a deaf mute as youโ€™re not loud to enjoy yourself plus the music is absolutely dire...

This was a favorite place of mine in Edinburgh in March. The owner (?), Pamela, was welcoming and friendly. The musicians were fantastic and fun. The vibe was straight out of central casting for the perfect Scottish pub. We were there early in the evening. They were doing a type of open mic at that hour. It was so entertaining. I would have liked to stay until closing, but my daughter wanted to try a couple of other places on our list. Sadly, none of those places were nearly as fun or charming. I cannot wait for my next visit to Scotland return to the Captain's Bar.

What a rare gem! Wandered in on a Wednesday at 8:30 and saw a couple musicians setting up. We enjoyed the next 3 hours of acoustic folk music as different performers rotated thru with two songs per performer. Most included vocals but one group of guitar, violin, and banjo were instrumental. One was a capella song/storyteller. The sequence was organized by Kevin Gore, a powerful vocalist in his own right well known for his Scottish ballads. A wonderful evening of storytelling in song! Very worth a few hours any evening!

The pub itself is a haven of delight and curiosity and yet is guarded with a frosty demeanour from a member of behind the bar who made ordering difficult, scolded us for smoking too near the doorway although they themselves were standing in the exact same place 10mins before. This pub 'personality' who served us then opened the doors of generosity, chat & service to a group of foreign tourists who would spend more....pub much nicer than the pub person! Pub is great but we were made to feel V unwelcome!
