The food is not great. The veg tempura was really good and very well done, but that really was as far as it went. The Pork KatsuDon was drenched in a really strange and soggy sauce which stopped us even being able to pick up the rice, and the whole dish was absurdly over-seasoned. The Takoyaki admittedly looked good on the plate, but they too were soggy right through, drenched again in oil which rendered them almost inedible - probably a consequence of the food being in oil some time before it was hot enough to be ready. The softshell crab roll looked good enough, but had a revolting aftertaste and had a tendency to fall to bits when picked up. Out of the roll the crab was fine, but the sushi was dressed up in such an elaborate way that suggested something was well wrong there. We couldn't even finish it.
Service leaves a lot of be desired. We had to ask for bowls as we were sharing food. No spoons were provided for the (wet) rice dishes. No water was provided for the table - we got a half glass of tepid water instead, and no one thought about asking us to refill them. (A jug on the table would have been a much better idea) Eye contact from staff was extremely hard to reach as everyone seemed to be doing something that didn't actually contribute to the movement of food - there seem to be loads of people working there all to little product. The waiting staff had to have confirmation twice for some of the dishes when they were delivered - it all seemed so very uncertain. The dishes were delivered quickly, which means that you might end up with a fuller table than you bargained for.
This place - a chain - seems to be going down the flash route, with menus on tablets etc, but the menus were wrong on two of them (they were missing dishes!) and the staff seemed unable to operate them and were even flummoxed with a request for a bowl of rice. Doubtless they are operating to a chain playbook, but things are not going well so far. It's all very clean and new (aside from the furthest table in the corner at which someone had been eating - staff? we were there as soon as it opened - and nothing was cleaned up from it).
It's really quite pricey for what you get. £15 or so for a softshell crab roll is inexplicable.
However, I save the worst for last: if you are going to have a word TEPPANYAKI on the side of your restaurant in enormous letters, you should really be selling it. When asked if they had any Teppanyaki - the real reason we went there - we were told that they were not doing it yet. That's really...
Read moreThis place opened recently and I was dying to check it out for lunch! I was not optimistic due to the bright light signage outside, as it appeared to be more of a food chain and less of an authentic Japanese restaurant. As I walked I received mixed feelings on the decor. I appreciated the more modern style seating but was not a fan of the fake Japanese maple tree nor being able to see the washing up or bins. Whilst the service did accommodate my walk-in for 2 for lunch, we were soon taken to our seats and left with a turned off IPad - no such explanation for its use. Of course I soon figured out it was a digital menu but a minute of the waiter’s time to explain this would make a big difference to the service. We ordered the chicken katsudon, chicken yakatori skewers and the pork katsu ramen. The pork katsu ramen was definitely the best of the three, I’d give it a solid 5.5/10. The pork was a little dry and the ramen was somewhat tasteless, helped by a good splash of soya sauce. The chicken yakatori on the other hand was a disappointing 4/10. There was not much of a yakatori taste - the chicken being a bit slimy - and it was smothered in melted cheese much to my surprise (was not mentioned in the menu). Now the real issue is with the chicken katsudon which was left half eaten. Firstly, the original taste of the dish was completely suffocated by the taste and smell of the plentiful amounts of katsuobushi (Japanese fish flakes). Secondly, there was a surprise appearance of egg throughout the entire dish, not mentioned on the menu. And lastly, there was an indescribable slimy-creamy sauce throughout the dish which simply made it unlikable. Perhaps this could all be aided by a description on the digital menu instead of simply photos however it’s safe to say I will not...
Read moreWe absolutely loved the food, one of the best Japanese restaurants we have been to lately. The chicken katsu and king prawn tempura were so crunchy.
HOWEVER, I only gave 4 stars because I was not satisfied with the service. Actually not at all, most of the staff members were nice today but while I was walking through the door, a kind blonde waitress told us to wait while she would try to find a place for us, as we didn't reserve our spot. Quite unprofessional but I then spotted 2 men, I believe one was a waiter and one was the supervisor or something but they spoke rudely to the waitress, I found this actually disrespectful as I was once a waitress and I experienced something similar. They treated her wrong and told her in the most demeaning way that if someone hasn't made a reservation, then you should check the reservation book. Well, I don't care if she is a slow learner or forgets, she is a human, you are a human, so treat her like one, even if it is a busy night! She comes to earn a living, and by you treating her in such a manner, it probably makes it a hard time going to work. No one deserves that! Please educate yourself on employment and human rights! And if the manager is reading this I would like you to look into this matter because it doesn't look good at all. The waitress was blonde and Asian with glasses and one waiter who was rude to her looked European, and the other who seemed to be a supervisor was Asian and a middle aged man.
Working with a team of dominant men who treat you with disrespect at a restaurant is a common thing, which needs to be stopped. So, please treat her with respect because I will be coming round again to check on this matter, and if I see another lady or human being treated like trash, I will...
