Rude staff & below average food.
I was so excited to eat here and had convinced my whole family to come with me. It started off by us entering and I politely asked a server if we just sit down ourselves or wait for a table. I received a "mhmm".
We managed to get 1 table and 2 seats, the 2 were for my sister and her partner who were only a few minutes away and were catching up. The floor wasn't that busy and there was plenty of free seats. Well this started getting us bad looks from another server even though I explained she was at the other side of grassmarket and was crossing over. 2 mins away.
My mum and step dad got the roasted vegetable soup for starter. Would NOT recommend. They said it was like the kind of food you'd get in the war. I tasted it (I'm not a fussy eater btw) and I was shocked by the lack of seasoning. It just tasted like water so it was obviously watered down. The bread they got was stale.
I got haggis balls for my starter. They were actually really nice. For main, I got bangers and mash. God it was so awful. I ate the sausages because we didn't have time to wait for other orders (we were off for a tour in half an hour by the time the food arrived). The mash was obviously microwaved due its rubbery texture. I had to squish it all with my fork but still didn't help. Tasted... like hardened fat, not mashed potatoes. It was a first for me. Sausages were rock hard at the ends (microwaved). My battered bars bar desert was probably the highlight of my experience here.
My mum got the steak and guineas pie. It was DRENCHED in guineas to the point that it was inedible. My step dad didn't even finish his burger and he loved a good edinburger. My sister asked for garlic bread and a baked potato. 20 minutes after it had arrived, it was still too hot for her to eat. But it was the garlic break that shocked me. Brown bread over toasted under the grill with cheese on top. It was rock hard when we got it.
I was so embarrassed I had thought this place would be amazing and serve incredible food. It didn't live up to these expectations in the slightest.
2 of the 5 or 6 staff on shift were actually friendly. I used to work in a restaurant bar and kitchen. It really does take nothing to be nice to your customers. It's also perfectly easy to NOT give them dirty looks, walk away in the middle of taking their order, talk to them in a condescending manner, and just make an entire family feel like they shouldn't be there. I brought my family all the way from Livingston to your restaurant. I'm still getting comments from family members about how bad their experience was and it's embarrassing.
I'm a big foodie and love to go out for family meals and get chatting to friendly staff. I will never be...
Read moreCame to this pub as a tourist earlier this week as it looked lovely from the outside. When I arrived a member of team (shaved head, eye piercing) proceeded to ask me to do track and trace, which of course is fine. I asked one question about how the track and trace worked in Scotland (I don’t live in Scotland, question was regarding the app) and the staff member was clearly annoyed to the extent that they raised their voice and talked to me in a manner that was not only rude but felt like a deliberate attempt to embarrass me. The staff member stated “this is not England” … “this is a different country” … words to the effect to underline my accent difference. To be clear, I had in no way criticised Scotland or Edinburgh, been drunk, loud or remotely obnoxious - I just wanted a drink. From just asking a simple question, unwarranted hostility was met.
It began to rain outside and a member of staff came outside to ask another table whether they’d like to come in from the rain. Again, this is fine but when they replied no, we were ignored and left outside.
Friends I was accompanied by could hear the staff member from our table and commented on how obnoxiously rude they had spoken to me. To treat any customer who is being reasonable and polite is completely unacceptable and for it to seem as if it was because of my accent is certainly not okay. Will never...
