Burger: far better than most takeaways (a different league to McDonald's) but at fifteen quid for a burger, small fries and shake the competition is more GBK, Bread Meat Bread, and the like. At that level, it's just a decent burger.
Fries: genuinely good quality, here, and better even than most premium burger restaurant chains. Even the small fries is more than you need unless you're in training for the cholesterol Olympics. You'd better like salt, though, because these delicious parcels of flavour come covered in the stuff.
Milkshake: a very good takeaway shake, and in a different league from the fast food outlets. Up there with GBK.
Soda: a real bonus is Coca Cola-branded self-serve machines. This means that you can have that Vanilla Diet Coke you've missed for too long. Or, if you are a terrible person who makes bad choices, you can mix up some horrifying half and half Dr Pepper with black cherry and vanilla. I gather such people exist and that their families struggle under the burden of shame.
Condiments: grab a plastic tub and fill it with mayonnaise or ketchup. Sachets are also available. If you've brought a St Mirren fan or other lower-order primate then pawn them off with the free...
Read moreMy friend and I were waiting for our orders, mine being 187, the person behind the counter, who spoke mumbled but I made out 87 so I stood up. At the same time another person went to the till, she then turned to me and said rudely “what’s your number?” I responded with “187” she then again rudely said “well this is 87, I’ll call you when yours is done” turned her back and was huffy the whole time, and began being very condescending when shouting out other order numbers, I felt very taken back as it was just a miss communication. Then when my order was ready she placed it on the counter and pushed the order towards me is a huffy manner and didn’t even acknowledge me. I find it very difficult to understand why they would be like that with a customer especially when this was just a miss communication. The other workers were very good with their customer service and I hope this person can learn from them. The person in question was a small blonde woman with an a small animal print scrunchie. Hope they...
Read moreFive Guys is a predictably good experience. Portion size is excellent even with the smaller offerings (small cajan fries is potentially enough chips for two people). Their meat is of good quality and tastes great.
They also have coke mixers that allow you to add cherry, vanilla, raspberry, lime etc to an infinitely refillable cup. I particularly liked that they have caffiene free coke to which I can add vanilla (not commercially available elsewhere) as I've been cutting down my caffiene intake. If only they had cafiene free Coke zero (which you can get from some shops recently) it'd be perfect...
A challenge worth trying is comparing Dr Pepper to Cherry Coke - they taste pretty much the same. Both available from the mixer.
Anyway if you want a burger fix that's more upmarket than McDs and Burger King then this is the place. If McDs ever reintroduce their signature burger though it'd be a serious contender. Barring this Five Guys...
