We arrived around 2:30pm to a very busy restaurant with one table left. Juliana the lovely waitress greeted us and sat us after clearing the last table.
She was on her own and being a total rockstar doing every position from Barista to waitress to Manager. Kudos to her as she still managed to keep her cool.
I had the homemade red kidney bean burger and my wife had the cesar salad. Both full of flavour and my wife said her salad was the best cesar salad she has had (and she has had a lot). I loved the burger and the handmade cut chips were a beautiful addition.
As we were mid meal there was a very rude woman complaining to Juliana that she didn’t feel welcomed and was making a total scene. Honestly she needed to read the room because Juliana was rocking it and if she felt uncomfortable when she came in, she should’ve left. Not try and do her best to make the girl cry.
As someone who works in hospo and has done for 24yrs the first thing I said before I even ordered was how well she was doing. I noticed it and so did everyone else who was dining apart from this very rude customer. Juliana felt so awkward and you could see it unfolding. She dealt with it very well.
I felt obliged to go outside and speak to the woman and let her know what she did was not cool. She all of a sudden became meek and mild because she knew she was in the wrong.
Anyway, beside that, the food and service was amazing. The cakes were also delicious and I had a Victoria sponge (which was perfect and not sweet, I hate cakes that are too sweet).
Thank you for catering for us vegans as the restaurants in Edinburgh weren’t too appealing until we came here.
Also people saying it’s too expensive need to understand what is happening in the hospitality industry atm with inflation. These places are the independent gems we need to collectively save!!!
What a total gem! Thank you...
Read moreI really hate to leave bad reviews, but this is the second time this happens and I have to say something about the appalling attitude of the staff. First time last year I popped in for dinner (they’d just open for service) and I remember attempting a bit of chat with the lady behind the till at the moment of paying, and complimented them about how good the cheesecakes in the display looked. Not even a smile or an attempt at being polite on her part. I can’t even remember what I ordered that evening so it mustn’t have been that mind-blowing anyway, but I do remember it was overpriced. Oh well, Edinburgh prices, I thought. Tried to justify the woman’s abrupt manners thinking maybe she was tired after a long day. I found myself in town again today, I was nearby and decided to give the place another go. It must have been 11:45, I saw fairy lights on from outside, no signs on the door, so I walked in and the woman behind the counter said in a really aggressive tone “We are not open??!!”. Horrible attitude, not a smile, not even a polite “Hello, sorry we are still closed, we open at 12” or something. I worked in hospitality myself and yes, we all have bad days, but it’s not the customer’s fault, and kindness costs nothing. Before posting this review I had a look at the others, and a few do mention the appalling customer service. Maybe consider that in order to work with people on a daily basis you need to have basic people skills, instead of filling the place with...
Read moreMy sister ordered a whole snickers cheesecake for my birthday. It was astonishingly bland, and tasted like someone blended a block of tofu, spread it across a base of dates and almonds, and drizzled very bitter chocolate sauce on top. No idea where the snickers part came in aside from some raw peanuts sprinkled on top. We thought surely there had been a mistake and we had accidentally gotten someone’s sugar free or gluten free order.
After reaching out for an explanation and possibly a refund, we were assured that our cake was made exactly as it always is and that there was nothing wrong with it. Given this reassurance, I feel confident recommending that no one order the snickers cheesecake, unless you are looking for an experience that harkens to convincing yourself that the weird low-calorie “dessert” you made while on a diet is actually tasty.
I have been vegan for a long time, and had some truly phenomenal vegan food, cheesecake included. This was decidedly not one of them. Might have expected to come across something like this in 2014, but given the current state of creativity and innovation in vegan cuisine, this cake was uninspired and disappointing.
Oh. And it was £60. So forgive me for having higher...
