š A very friendly welcome but an unnecessary 30 minute queue outside. š¢
There was plenty of room to get a view of the stage. We found ourselves standing at the back of the barš»- itās a stand up after all.
š We found the host actually the funniest of all the acts. Itās a bit of a letdown to have a break after the first act, but I guess there is a format that works for the venue to serve food/drinks.
The only downside was the food and the toilets. I was prepared to eat until I went to the toilets! The serving hatch is at the top of the stairs as you go down to the toilets. I guess there is a lot of positive/negative psychology about seeing the kitchen.
The toilets are undesirable; clean/ish, but the floor became gradually wet; downside of hand driers. Definitely left not feeling clean. Iām not sure how a female would feel safe? Tight squeeze and shared access. I felt like being at an underground student bar. If you like that kind of thing and arenāt so bothered, you can enjoy the comedy.
Overall, it was a good night, and I would come again, but next time I would arrive just before it starts to avoid the queue/rush to get a seat. Be prepared to stand at the back and have a few drinks (and not eat). If youāre desperate to go to the toilet, probably try and time this at the point that you wanted to leave either before the fourth or the very end and then head out for dinner. Or drink lots of beer and not be bothered.
The club also kindly rearranged our tickets to another date after some disruptive weather; which was very kind. They didnāt need to do that, so itās a harsh three stars. Bonus 4th point for the toilets being sorted and a 5th point for QR points around the room so standing audience can easily order food/widening the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI went to The Stand on my own on one of my final nights in Scotland. I read that it was best to go as soon as the doors opened or you would be unlikely to find a seat, so I did so. The line to get in at opening time wasn't that long, and everyone who was in line definitely got a seat as well as several people who wandered in over the next half hour. However, by arriving at door opening time, I had obligated myself to wait for 2 hours before the first act began. As a lone tourist in a tightly packed room, this was quite unpleasant, even though I did have a table and a seat. I attempted to pass the time by ordering a bite to eat and was somewhat disappointed by the buffalo beef burger that I got.
The show finally started at 9 p.m. To be honest, the hostess was way funnier than a lot of the acts they brought on stage, who seemed ill-prepared for the evening, lost their train of thought in the joke telling, oftentimes weren't funny or relatable, and even looked at notes several times. Furthermore, there were several intermissions, sometimes even after only one comedian's act. I will say, though, that the final act was well-paced, funny, and somewhat unexpected as he brought in musicality to the comedy act.
All in all, I spent 4.5 hours in this establishment for maybe 30 minutes of true entertainment. Given that some comedy doesn't always resonate with every individual, I can't fully blame the comedians; perhaps it was just I who didn't find it funny. However, I do think that the night could have been better organized by the club. I feel somewhat meh about the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreForget other reviews, this is the skinny ! ( for a Sat Night ) Arrive about 30 mins before doors open to be front of the queue, by 7pm the line was about 20 people. Take a brolly just in case :) NO deposit was taken from us incase of bad behaviour, ( as another reviewer said ) it doesn't happen ! If you want food, order as you go in when you get your drinks from the bar, let your wife/partner/ friend or whoever is with you get your seats ( we took table 2 right side by the wall, no one can stand behind or infront, next to stage door but opposite side to the loo ) Lets face it, it's basic, but that's the whole point, what do you expect for the price, the moaners who expect the Apollo should give this a miss, however if you want a REAL night of raw comedy this is the place to go. My wife and i came here looking for a great night out of down to earth comedy and got a FANTASTIC night of comedy, my wife even won the prize draw at the end of the night aswell ! If you let the acts do their job it makes the evening even better, they don't need anyone to heckle, ( just one drunk lady ) they give a brilliant performance without it, we've never laughed so much......really ! The trip to the loo's is an experience and quite hillarious when you get talking to someone who's had a tipple too much, but hey that's the charm of the club. Overall money well spent, when we visit Edinburgh again, the Stand is top of our list of places to go. Full marks to all the Staff and Performers on...
