I'm not going back there for sure. Atmosphere - definitely not cosy at all, and no chance to mention the word romantic there. The entrance door was constantly open and delivery people were in and out all the time. Some had to wait long out in the rain and we saw them leaving disappointed (some angry). Of course, the door couldn't close properly so I could feel the drift all the time. I felt like I'm in a Wearhouse or in a courier service office. Definitely not like in a restaurant. Sorry, j understand that the delivery service is part of your business but you need to care for your customers dining in!
Service - maybe it's better to say nothing, as I haven't experienced nothing worse - no attention, no politeness, just quickly throwing the plates on the table and that's it, no smile, absolutely careless for the customer's experience! Japanese approach and manners - zero!
Food - I've visited most sushi places in Edinburgh and the Lothians and I can say that the sushi was just okay. If you ever had a sushi from the supermarket - this one was just a level up! The wakame salad wasn't seasoned at all. It was kind of splashed on the plate (which wasn't very clean too!). From the menu we choose the last three rolls - all of them had fried food in them, which wasn't correctly described. The one with the prawn was well described as being with tempura. But the other two rolls were not described in the menu as being with fried crab (very oily and heavy for eating) and tempura asparagus (soft and soggy in oil). Basically we were misled by the menu and according to the service provided so far we didn't even want to question it, pointless!
Payment - cash only! Again - how nice - go out in the rain to the cash machine at the corner. I've checked later - it states on their Google page about it, but how would you expect not to be able to do a card payment?!
Thanks for reading, Maybe as a take away option is good, but definitely not great for a dine-in experience in a Japanese...
Read moreTerrible experience. We went with a group of 8 of us including 6 adults, a 4 year old and a 1 year old - both of who behaved so well considering the uncomfortable atmosphere. We wanted to find a Japanese restaurant we could book so called up and told them we'd have two children, one of whom would need a highchair, they said they had a booster seat and that was fine.
First of all, on arrival, the staff were rude and unaccommodating. Having never been before, we obviously hadn't realised that it was going to be a traditional setting where children don't usually go. They initially tried to put us in a booth for 6 and just assumed the children would squish in? Then they tried to put the 1 year old's booster seat on a bench which we know isn't safe and the rest of the adults had their chairs sitting on a ledge, so many risks that it's not even worth mentioning. When the staff came for our order, they pressured us into giving our order before we were ready even though we had asked for more time. Every little question or interaction was too much effort for them. It goes without saying that there was nowhere to change the baby and they turned their nose up that we'd even ask such a stupid question. I understand we had come somewhere that was not used to children but it was early (5.30pm!) and they had seemed ok with it on the phone or we wouldn't have bothered! The staff were bitching about us when we were leaving. I'd give service 0 if I could, it's up there with the worst service I've ever encountered.
The terriyaki chicken donburi was tasteless and unappetising. The salmon in the donburi bowel was ok but the rest of it was bland. The sushi was ok and reasonably priced. There were a range of starters that were fine. The green tea was a teabag not tea leaves that was basically just tepid water.
The service is what really ruins the place. This is a restaurant that really thinks it's...

It's not perfect of course, but it is good enough to be considered sushi to me.
Ingredients were fresh, high quality and well executed. Areas of improvement include the neta being a bit too tight, as well as the neta and Shari's ratio being a little off. It's high praise, because there's nothing too else to fault honestly
Prices are expected slightly high for something of this quality, but really it's very reasonable and you can't complain
Second visit: Eel nigiri was absolutely superb. The ratio is much better than the maki
Sashimi quality was good too, if I were to nitpick, the hokkigai was a bit mild, the akami was just a tad fishy, the rest were good and overall rather high quality. Also, 16pcs they really didn't shortchange us in terms of the quality, no cheap cuts, so if you want to get sashimi the platter is definitely a good option
Negitori was stunning. It's masterful how the different layers of flavours come tgt, w the incredibly creamy texture of the negitori and strong umami. I find it comedic that it's executed at such a high level but the knife work is a little lacking, but that did not distract from how good the roll was.
Even more impressed on my second visit than my first. Again, I have almost Japanese standards, and I really was not expecting to be impressed at any sushi place in Edinburgh.
Third visit: Don't takeaway the sushi, either the quality today wasn't good or more likely even after 45mins it's nowhere near as good
Fourth visit: The negitoro futomaki really isn't anywhere near as bomb as when we first had it, severely lacking in umami compared to the first time. Unagi nigiri...
