The food was extremely disappointing, which was such a surprise when so many of the reviews are so positive. It seemed pretty obvious to us that the dishes we had were heated from frozen. The £17.50 Gambas Pil Pil was frozen prawns in a simple sauce with spicy rice. If the rice wasn't microwave in a bag it was a good imitation. The beef chili in the enchiladas was cold, while the plate was steaming hot after being nuked in the microwave. The tequenos and croquetas tasted from frozen too. The stand out disappointment was the guacamole, £2.50 for two tablespoons of squeezy supermarket guac. For a garnish that is so easy to make delicious it was just awful. Our server was lovely, but was completely over-stretched meaning we got very little attention. It really was a shame. Cocktails were well priced, and okay. I wonder if the head chef recently decided that cooking from fresh just wasn't worth it financially. Or perhaps we were just very unlucky in our choices! I wish I could say otherwise, but I absolutely would not recommend...
Read moreI rang them last night asking whether they offered takeaway because I was exhausted and too ill to cook. They said yes, so I ordered beans, Mexican rice, mushrooms, tortillas, guacamole, olives and sour cream. They said the food would be ready to collect in 20 minutes, which it was. But when I unpacked everything, the Mexican rice was missing. I rang up, and he said 'oh, yeah, it's here: we forgot to pack it'. No offer to bring or send it round. So I had to go out in the rain for a second time, and by the time I got home, the beans and mushrooms were only lukewarm, and the tortillas were cold, hard, and stuck to each other. The restaurant was empty: not a single diner, so it wasn't as though they were rushed off their feet. The rice and guacamole were good, the olives tasted like Tesco's value range, the beans had no flavour, the mushrooms were okay, and the tortillas were inedible. I won't be back. I spent a total of 40 minutes walking back and forth and back and forth...
Read moreSabor Criollo is easily one of my favourite restaurants in Edinburgh. As it's in Stockbridge, it has a great setting and is a short walk towards local bars if you fancied going for a few drinks after your meal.
The food is quite simply, sensational. I've been several times with my partner, and she and I often both end up getting the chicken enchiladas. They are absolutely drowning in delicious melted cheese and the meat is always cooked to perfection.
It's worth pointing out as well that this dish comes with the tastiest refried beans I've ever had.
The cocktails are very reasonably priced and bloody good too - freshly made on the premises.
Sabor isn't a large restaurant, so it only takes 3-4 tables to be filled for it to provide some great atmosphere.
I'm yet to be disappointed on a visit there, and I can't begin to imagine why anyone would ever...
