This pub discriminates unfortunately, and indulges in bullying on too many occasions. I visited about 2/3 years ago alone, I am a writer, and often like travelling with my laptop. I'd been in a few times before with mixed experiences. Many of the staff are fine and down to earth, but for some, there's an attitude of being aloof, and having far too many airs and graces about them, which is a real shame, because as I said many of the staff at this pub are quite gracious. I raised a couple of minor concerns on this visit, that the floor was wet and smelled a bit next my table, and I politely raised the question if a dog had perhaps had an accident here? instead I was told by one of the girls in a condescending manner it was just a dog's drink bowl, and then she dismissed by concern out of hand. I didn't stay long, but later I think on the same visit, I noted they had added a service charge without my consent. I am a writer and have little in excess money... so I raised this with the woman I was paying, and again, the same attitude, condescending... an attitude of "I wasn't good enough for this place." I have little doubt unfortunately a number of the female staff who I spoke to judged me on what they regarded to be my social class, and monetary worth. And this isn't some inferiority complex on my part, I've been surprised at times in Edinburgh that some places which appear to a wealth aesthetic, can have staff who a pleasant demeanour. Unfortunately this is not the case with some of the staff at the Raeburn in the past, and probably now. Anyhow, the next time I returned to the Raeburn, what do you know... I'm banned? Edinburgh, is getting worse, and worse for this elitism. It's wealthy city, but this success is increasingly going to some people's heads... and when managers should have the "courage" and "decency" to step in, instead they too often take the 'cowards' way out... and do the wrong thing, and go along with the discrimination. And I know this is "discrimination" I'd put my life on the fact... and I doubt those managers at the Raeburn who are cowardly continuing this discrimination can say the same? You can tell this is discrimination, because when I asked the reason why I was banned, I was told I left the table a mess? What? I know this isn't true, and just a nonsense! I've been back since and tried to speak to them, and get various 'excuses' and the fact is, if there reason was genuine... then they would be able to state this? Do these people think of anyone else but their own small little lives? Meanwhile the people in Ukraine are fighting for all our values, and giving their lives... and yet the Raeburn won't even demonstrate common human...
Read moreThis bar / restaurant was a welcomed addition to Stockbridge when it first opened but unfortunately it has failed to live up to expectations, at least in my opinion anyway. As a modern bar to hang out in during the warmer months, it's first class both in terms of atmosphere and design but it's the food - which is what me and my family would primarily go here for - which is the big let down. The food is poor, they continually run out of items on the menu, and they never have any roast dishes left on a Sunday! Yes, there is invariably no roast on a Sunday from around 6pm onwards! The reason? "Because it's Sunday we have ran out of meat because it's effectively the end of a week and deliveries are on Monday" is what the manager told us. It leaves you incredulous really. I hope they improve on the food in this place soon or sell up to someone who cares more about what they are serving rather than how nice the aesthetics are, after all Edinburgh has enough swanky bars. I think Tam Cowan called it right in his latest restaurant review column; it's overpriced, under par and in need of a...
Read moreJust returned from a super 6 night stay in Edinburgh at The Raeburn. Staff are lovely - warm and helpful. Our room was spacious and had everything we needed (some bits I had to find, like the shower cap!). Bathroom was huge, spotless and modern. Daily Tunnocks teacakes are never a bad thing imho...|Breakfasts are excellent. Throughout our stay each of us had something different from the menu daily and everything was wonderful. We ate in the restaurant one evening, with another great experience. |The place itself is incredibly busy as a local bar and restaurant, which is testament to the service it offers. We often came back late afternoon to a lot of frivolity downstairs, but could not hear a thing in our room.|The Stockbridge area is lovely, with some nice little shops, lots of cafes, and excellent Sunday market and some excellent eateries (Sotto is particularly good!) In this regard if there is somewhere you really want to go while you are staying book it early. There was one restaurant we couldn't get into 3 days in advance, so gosh, that'll have to be...
