I had the pleasure of dining at Montrose Restaurant on Saturday, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The dishes were beautifully curated, showcasing a perfect balance of flavors and presentation that truly delighted the senses. Each plate was a work of art, reflecting the skill and creativity of the kitchen team.
To complement the fantastic food, we were treated to an exceptional wine selection curated by Murray, the sommelier. His expertise and recommendations elevated our meal, pairing each course perfectly with wines that enhanced the overall dining experience.
A special thank you to Angus, who served us throughout the evening. His attentiveness and friendly demeanor made us feel welcomed and well taken care of, contributing to the overall enjoyment of our visit.
The only feedback I have is regarding the cheese course. Typically, when restaurants offer a cheese selection, it includes four cheeses, crackers, and accompaniments. However, at Montrose, this selection comes to £32, which I find rather expensive for just cheese.
That said, I can't wait to return to Montrose and experience the magic of their menu and wine offerings...
Read moreHaving eaten previously at Timberyard we were looking forward to trying out Montrose. It was such a disappointment.
First the good bits. The venue was lovely, very relaxing. The wine list was amazing - if a little pricey. They accommodated an allergy that I'd forgotten to mention when booking.
The lunchtime set menu of three good-sized courses for £30 was excellent value for money. Our first course of devilled mussels was really tasty, but unfortunately, the menu went downhill after that. The main of duck ragu with polenta reminded me of a school dinner. It was a good job we were given soup spoons to eat it with. The third course, a summer fruit pavlova, was inedible. Not sure what had gone wrong with the meringue but not even a steak knife would have cut through it. The restaurant was busy, not full, yet getting service was a challenge. Short staffed maybe? Having read the other reviews here maybe we were just unlucky visiting during...
Read moreMontrose is a great spot. It's at Abbeyhill - a short and pleasant walk from Princes St/the Royal Mile or not far the top of Easter Road if you're coming up from Leith. We went for the wine bar/smaller plates option leaving the set tasting menu in the restaurant upstairs for another day. We started with a martini served in chilled sipping glasses and then went on to have mussel croquettes, a gilda (lollipop) of olive, anchovy and pickled pepper. A dish of cherry toms and burrata served in a fermented tomato juice dressing was like the first taste of summer. We ploughed on with smart hash browns served with pickled red onion and a veal schnitzel - all for sharing and plenty for three. We had a bottle of the Gruner Vertliner - nicely chilled for the sunny lunchtime as we watched Hibs and St Johnstone fans heading off to the game. But Montrose was the winner last Saturday....
