[UPDATED] Overall: Awesome except mac & cheese. They've cut down on their menu items but still have generous portions of VERY delicious food. Recommended for dates, dark and personal atmosphere.
[2nd] Upon our second visit, I've noticed that they took some items off their menu. This disappointed me, but they still had an interesting array of options. Their grilled chicken main is a deconstructed chicken balmoral, a delectable chicken and haggis dish with an amazing whisky cream sauce. Though not a large portion compared to the other options. Their venison and pork sausage was massive and juicy, and came with loads of chips. Their chips are more like mini wedges, they're so crispy with a nice fluff on the inside, and seasoned with some spices. So tasty!! My mother enjoyed her vegetarian burger, I thought it wasnt great but too each their own. They had a very dark atmosphere and we struggled to read the menu.
[1st] Proper scottish scran in a lovely wee pub, got the cullen skink and mac (no photo). Mac was floury and not cheesy, not great. Cullen skink was creamy, smoky, and quite filling at 6.50. Friends had fish and chips (small was a good size for one!) and steak pie, both said were good. Will come again for their...
Read moreFirst dinner out in Edinburgh and it was great. There is a ground floor, ideal for sports, drinks, and chat. The basement is cosy, has its own bar, and good ambience for dinner, far from the noise upstairs. The service was great and very friendly, although a bit too wary of Covid (I don't think it makes any sense to make the guest pick everything from the plate by themselves, but some folks might appreciate the extra measures). Good selection of beers. I asked for a stout and I was served a March of Penguin's, which I really enjoyed. The food was excellent! Chips were handcut and perfectly fried. I had the venison sausage and the haggies in a mug (more like a thick stew of haggies) and I really can't decide which I enjoyed more. Missus had the steak pie, homemade, and delicious from the filling to the gravy. If you are looking for a feel of pub food in Edinburgh I can totally...
Read moreThis seems to be a very traditional Scottish restaurant. My husband and I were the only ‘tourists’ there. Food is delicious, dishes are the right size, and prices are perfect! I ordered a fish platter and it was the most delicious fish board ever! It was all Scottish fish perfectly paired with oat cakes and fresh bread. My husband ordered Cullen Skink, a traditional Scottish soup and it was also delicious. I would say the side salad is a bit overpriced for the size. But it was very tasty. I could go back each day for a different meal and I would not get bored. The staff is very friendly and also very willing to make recommendations based on your likes. You need to ask if you have any dietary restrictions, but it seems like they are flexible. The environment is also super nice!...
