Ours was our first meal of our holidays. My daughter and I had rocket salad and fish 'n' chips, then shared a sticky toffee pudding. All were excellent. This was our first time eating at the Hermitage (previously the Morning Glory, but now with new - and apparently much better - owners) and I must say that it was as good as any quality restaurant. Indeed better than most. The salad was simple - fresh rocket w/parmesan and sprinkles of balsamic. The fish 'n' chips included the best fish we'd ever had, with a thin, light, yet crispy batter. Chipped potatoes (not fries), plus pots of minted mushy peas and tremendous tartar sauce completed that plate. The sticky toffee pudding was also excellent, with fresh raspberries and a 'plain' ice-cream (i.e. not flavour to cloy with that of the pudding sauce - which itself was not too sweet). My daughter and I are rather picky when it comes to eating out and generally avoid it for fear of (a costly) disappointment. But the Hermitage delivered excellently and in a very understated manner. We chose to sit in the quiet 'dining' area as opposed to the bar. You might want to...
Read moreNice little gastropub, small inside so consider booking if you are eating. It is about a 10 minute walk from The Domion cinema so keep this place in mind if you're planning a cinema visit. Sorta typical Edinburgh prices - we were just shy of £200 for 5 people for lunch, with most of the group having a couple of alcoholic drinks too. I had the olives and bread to start, bread and oil/balsamic was nice but wasn't too keen on the olive dressing (a bit tangy, personal preference though). It was a Sunday visit so their special main was roast beef - served with broccoli, tatties, carrots, a huge yorkie and gravy. It was lovely. They had 2 special starters on that day too (which looks like they change weekly) - prawn cocktail and blackpudding & chorizo croquettes. 2 of the group got croquettes which went down a treat. The fish and chips was decent, big bit of fish and nice and tasty but chips could have been better.
Nothing to complain about, nothing...
Read moreMyself a some friends had dinner here last night but although the food was good my meal was entirely ruined by the excess of salt covering it. I raised the issue with the waitress who didn't seem to understand my issue, but eventually she told me that I could get another plate of food but would have to wait. As my friends were already enjoying their food I didn't want to be sitting there waiting then have them wait on me when my food finally arrived. I told the waitress that wasn't an option but that I wasn't happy. Later a man,the manager I think, came over and I explained my grievance to him. He then proceeded to argue with me that ALL chefs add salt to meals on the plates. I appreciate they cook with salt but to season a persons plate of food in my opinionis wrong. No apology was offered and I was still charged full price. Poor...
