We visited here to try the locally renowned Sunday carvery.
The Farmers Feast is not the place to head for a romantic meal, but if you love meat (and lots of it!) you can't go wrong here.
There was a mix up with our booking on arrival, but the owner immediately resolved it and found us a table.
It gets mega MEGA busy here on Sundays, so don't turn up without a booking as you will likely be disappointed.
There were long queues for the buffet because this place is so popular, so it takes a while to be served. Turkey, beef and pork were on offer, but the pork had run out by 1.30.
Staff serve all the food, so you don't get a choice about how much you would want of everything, which for me was a slight downside. I was given a mini mountain of meat (it would have lasted me three days!), one Yorkshire pudding, one piece of roast potato, plus lots of other veg such as parsnips, cauliflower cheese, carrots, cabbage etc.
The beef was a little dry for my liking (if you arrive later though this is not uncommon at a carvery). The turkey was absolutely delicious, and so were the parsnips. In fact I don't think I have ever eaten such perfectly cooked parsnips - they were truly mouth watering!
I couldn't finish all the meat on my plate because the volume was just too much for me. If you love protein you aren't going to be left hungry, but I suspect most people would be happy with a little less meat.
I'm sure the staff will adapt portion sizes if asked, but as there was a long queue I didn't want to hold everybody up by being fussy about what I had. I don't know if it would be problematic, but in many carveries people help themselves to the vegetables and gravy, which speeds things up (it could be there isn't enough room for this here though).
For dessert I had some of their delicious trifle and cream, and it was absolutely glorious! There was a traditional trifle and also a chocolate orange one, which is what I chose. I was full to the brim from lunch, but it looked so tempting and you can always find room for a pud! I absolutely loved the dessert and made myself finish even though I was about to burst because it was so lovely. Thankfully the trifle is nice and light, so it does go down well even after a heavy lunch!
The owner really cares about whether his customers enjoy themselves, and clearly he's gone to a great deal of effort and trouble to ensure that happens.
This restaurant is definitely worth visiting if you are in Bakewell and want to avoid the town centre eateries. Just make sure you are REALLY hungry before you go in, or otherwise take a very big doggy bag! And don't give pudding a swerve - it's delish so save some room for...
Read moreInitially attended for the Sunday Carvery and we had paid for 3 meals. Unfortunately, my son (who is autistic) decided he didnt want a carvery and let us know at the last minute. The owner was very good and refunded us the money without any issues. I decided to give it another go the next day and have the full English breakfast (as there was no way my son would turn his nose up at that). Breakfast was a good price (£10.50) and you got bread, fried bread 2 x bacon, 2 x sausage, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms and an egg. It was a good size (and I am a 6ft 16 stone bloke). I always like the atmosphere as it is busy and there are often farmers who go in there (so you know the atmosphere will be laid back and not filled with snooty stuck up people). I've been here a few times. Highly recommend for a good breakfast. Be aware it gets busy and I would suggest reserving a table if you...
Read moreWhat a gem of a place. The portions are enormous and the food is fantastic. My husband, daughter and I visited for Sunday lunch and would definitely recommend it. The café has introduced a range of COVID-19 protection measures including the usual party registration on arrival and all staff were wearing PPE. The carvery area is screened off behind perspex. One table is called up at a time to keep everyone distanced and you can choose what you want to eat from the wide carvery options available (food is plated by the staff). The puddings were as delicious as the roast dinner. The carvery is £8 for adults with reduced prices for OAPs and children. The whole meal including puddings and soft drinks cost us £33....
