We ordered for the first time from this restaurant and had high hopes based on the reviews... We tried the vegetarian platter and other veg options with rice and noodle dishes too...
Unfortunately on arrival, we found one dish was incorrect, and also a less expensive one too at that and another seemingly missing!
On opening all of the boxes, we were shocked to find nothing resembled the description or pictures on their website. All food comprised of deep fried battered pieces of vegetables. We think this was the vegetarian platter for two, but hard to know as nothing was labelled, but it was very disappointing. As all the battered foods like the aubergine, was very very greasy and the aubergine was undercooked too, making it inedible.
All other fried veg and tofu were lacking in flavour and again, just too heavily socked in oil, almost as if they'd been left in oil for too long and not drained before being put into the containers.
The sticky rice came in a bag and was just a solid block of rice that no longer resembled rice, the coconut rice was extremely sweet to the point it was off putting. The plain noodles again, were soaked in grease and just a solid block of noodles rather than looking or smelling appealing or appetizing, almost as if they'd been cooked prior and preheated, as noodles in our experience never come in a solid block unless they've been left to go cold maybe and reheated!
We ordered 2 mains a vegetable curry type dish and a tofu curry type dish. Neither of these were present! Literally as stated above, all of the food was just deep fried plain vegetables with some tofu. NOT what we ordered or what the pictures or descriptions depicted!
We called the restaurant immediately, and explained they'd missed off a dish and got one wrong, and that unfortunately all food was just so heavy on oil. We were very polite about it, and they did apologise and credit to them - refunded us. We never waste food, but on this occasion did not eat the meal, as it was just, (you guessed it)! full of oil. When we say full of oil, I mean to the point I could sweeze said items and watch the oil drip out on my hand, even the plain noodles!
Also the sweet and sour sauces, seemed heavy on something that didn't taste right, possibly or most probably MSG.
So if you're a veggie or vegan looking at their many suitable options, we WOULD NOT recommended on this occasion.
If we were to guess, this food seemed almost cooked by someone inexperienced, or not even from a restaurant!
We have never publically given a takeaway or restaurant a bad review before as we never have had reason to do so, and if there has been an issue, don't like to be petty and resolve it between ourselves and the restaurant and leave it at that, but have to be honest here and say we DID NOT get what we paid for here and found the food was just terrible to be...
Read moreFirstly we have been regular patrons of Favourite Thai since it opened. Under the previous owner who retired a couple of years ago it was truly excellent in all respects and I considered it my favourite restaurant in the UK. We have celebrated numerous birthdays, Valentines and anniversaries there.
When the owner retired a manager was appointed and initially it was much the same. Don’t know who owns or runs it now but having not visited for some months last nights experience was truly shocking.
First the famous Favourite Thai sharing starter. Gone was the fabulous Thai crab cake and carrot salad to be replaced with a range of fried items all in the same shade of beige and including that most traditional Thai item - a battered onion ring. There were also two small spare ribs in hoisin sauce so not exactly Thai.
Next our favourite: sea bass with mango, chillies and Thai basil. Normally this is sea bass in a light tempura butter with a salad of sour mango, cherry tomatoes and onions, chillies, coriander and basil with a lime based dressing which cuts the batter. This was two pieces of cod which appeared and tasted like they had come from the local chippy with mango on top but no tomatoes, virtually no onion, no discernible chilli or basil and two coriander leaves. The taste was overwhelmingly of cooking oil and the mouth feel was vile. The fish would have been ok with a side order of chips and mushy peas but was about as Thai- m tasting as my husband’s socks.
The Pad mee noodles are normally full of spring onions and bean sprouts and dressed with fried chopped garlic. There was no garlic and virtually no vegetables. Just a dollop of very greasy noodles that -what I ate - sat on my stomach like lead.
The real shocker though was the service. We were offered one drink at the beginning and nothing else throughout the meal. Service used to be superb with complimentary water and prawn crackers on every table.
After finishing as best we could the disappointing mains we sat back and waited for the dessert menu. Puds here used to be lovely and frankly I needed something to take away the taste of cooking oil. The lady who seemed to be in charge came over took the plates and said - with no word of apology - “do you want anything else because I need this table?”
Our answer was “no. We will have the bill please”. This was £60. For the first time in my life I didn’t leave a tip but I will leave you one: avoid,...
Read moreJust eaten here and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! We walked in and were accommodated despite not having a reservation and even though we were limited on time. The service was quick and efficient, whilst remaining really friendly and pleasant. I had Pad Thai and my friend had Red Curry with Prawns and both dishes were amazing. You could taste all the flavours and non overpowered the other, perfectly balanced! Would recommend this to anyone who wants to try amazing Thai food and is passing through Burton. Thanks for a...
