Review: Ate O'clock, York Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ate O'clock in the historic heart of York is truly a dining experience par excellence. From the moment we stepped in, it was evident that this establishment goes above and beyond to create moments that diners will cherish.

Booking as walk-ins can sometimes be a hit or miss, but with Ate O'clock, it felt like they were genuinely awaiting our arrival. In a gesture that speaks volumes of their dedication to customer satisfaction, they reached out via phone, welcoming us in with open arms.

Our celebration of our first anniversary was rendered even more special by the thoughtful touches they added. The complimentary prosecco sparkled not just in our glasses but also in our eyes, and the delectable chocolate, with the sweet anniversary message artfully inscribed in chocolate script, was the icing on the cake. Such gestures, while seemingly simple, resonate deeply and make an occasion unforgettable.

Beyond these gestures, the overall ambiance exudes warmth and coziness. The staff are incredibly attentive, ensuring that every need is met with a smile. It's the kind of place where you instantly feel at ease, enveloped in an atmosphere of genuine hospitality.

In conclusion, Ate O'clock is not just a dining venue; it's an experience. They masterfully blend exquisite culinary offerings with heartfelt gestures, making any occasion, whether it's an anniversary or a casual dinner, truly memorable. It's no exaggeration to say everything was beyond amazing. A deserving recipient of a five-star rating, I wholeheartedly recommend Ate O'clock for anyone looking to celebrate life's special...

I left a gift bag on the table after my meal with friends that had some gift wrapped jewellery inside. By the time I realised approximately 5 minutes had passed we promptly returned, as we were literally around the corner, to see if the gift bag had been popped to one side. The female staff said nothing had been found, my friend then approached the owner/manager who also said nothing had been handed in, she then asked to see the security footage then as the bag must have been stolen, he then changed his tune and went to the bin and got out my purchase and said only rubbish had been left on the table. My friend pointed out that why was it gift wrapped if it was just rubbish and then why did they open it. He said there was nothing in it. The jewellery had been pushed into the sponge so on looking it looked empty so they then just put it in the bin. She then said you had my contact details from the reservation why didn’t you ring me, he said it was just rubbish on the table, but clearly it wasn’t as it was gift wrapped and the receipt was inside. They didn’t even give us a chance to return. They opened the gift thought it was empty, as they couldn’t see anything as it was pushed into the sponge, so they couldn’t steal anything so then dumped it in the bin. He just laughed at us. Granted I should have taken care of my purchase but as a customer surely they could have given us a little more respect and given us a little chance to return for my purchase instead of trying to steal it. Please be cautious in...

The entrance is lovely but I think it sets out an expectation they don't live up to when you get in. The staff were friendly but made mistakes. We asked for our toddler's drink not to have ice in it. They brought one with lots of ice (for a 2 year old and put it in a thin long glass...) but this was changed when we asked again. We asked to have everything come out at the same time instead of spacing out starters separately from mains (anyone with a toddler will feel the pain of dragging out a meal in sections ..) which was acknowledged but then things came separately. I pointed this out to the girl who brought out the starters when she brought them and she said oh, ok and left. We assumed it was to get the rest of the items but we didn't see anyone again until the starters got cleared out. The tables were very crammed in. Really struggled to pick things up when our toddler dropped something. We were sat in the covered alleyway part of the restaurant. The toilets are upstairs, up a narrow twisted staircase and the toilet we went it was dirty. I'm not sure how often they get cleaned. I had the roast rump, it was delicious but the meat was cold when I got it. My husband has a chicken burger which was nice but average quality wise. Our little one had the kid's beef burger. Her vegetables were cooked nicely, she didn't really eat much if the burger. She said she didn't like it. Ate a decent amount of my rump though. All in all, beautiful entrance but we wouldn't...

Visited October 2023: beautiful outside walkway to get into the building and the inside is pretty too. There is a ramp so wheelchair accessible which I appreciate. We were a party of three and two of us ordered a roast. The food arrived quickly however one of us ordered beef and one ordered pork and two pork arrived: Us “Excuse me, I ordered beef.” Waitress “That’s pork.” Us “Yes but I ordered beef, I didn’t order pork.” Waitress “Right. Well it was pork.” Us “No it wasn’t. We ordered one pork one beef.” She goes to get a beef, while we wait with our food getting cold as we didn’t want to eat without our third member having their food! She then bring the beef back and again said “I had pork,” we didn’t continue to argue with her- it was her mistake but she continued to act as though we were in the wrong for requesting the correct food. No condiments were offered so we had to wait while they got those. The food was okay but it was marred by having to wait for the correct orders- the place wasn’t busy, we were dining when they first opened. When the bill came, they had added a service charge which annoys me because this isn't America, staff are paid well. Increase your prices if you’re not getting enough profit. It was particularly irritating considering she got the order wrong and then argued about it. When we went to pay there was no option to remove the service charge so I had to ask- it’s embarrassing to ask for it to be removed but she did once I asked.
