What initially seemed to be a friendly homely place quickly turned into the worse experience of hospitality in quite some time.
The smiling and accommodating waitress at the till took our take-away order of cream tea and savoury sandwiches with no trouble at all. However, a short while later, a different, very stoned face waitress handed us our our order.
Upon checking in the bag, we noticed that the tea sandwiches were two large sandwiches (not cut in the mini tea sandwiches as the shop offered). We apologetically asked that the sandwiches be cut (for sharing) in the high tea smaller triangle, to which the now aggressive waitress snapped 'you lose half the sandwich'.
We were of course aware of the fact that the traditional tea sandwich cutting removed the crust so to not cause too much nuisance I replied that it was fine for the crust to be kept on and asked if the sandwiches could just be cut as tea sandwiches. The waitress then snapped ' so, basically, you want smaller sandwiches' in a tone suggesting the the request was preposterous... I then confirmed this and reiterated that they simply be cut like tea sandwiches. During this exchange, I was holding the bag with the sandwiches and at this point the waitress snatched the bag from my hand, trying to pull it out from mine. I was very shocked and asked if everything was OK which was responded by the waitress continuing to pull the bag from my hands at which point I let go and said I didn't understand why the waitress was so aggressive. The waitress stormed off, and we then received our tea cut sandwiches.
Unfortunately, after walking a few paces we saw that the cucumber sandwich had ham added to it (not in our order). So we regretfully went back to the shop and waited at the counter for someone to emerge. After calling 'hello' and waiting a while, the 'warmer' waitress emerged. We apologised and said there must have been some confusion with the order as there was ham in the sandwich. The waitress took the sandwich and said a new one would be prepared. As there was just awkward silence and no apology, I apologised to the waitress for the confusion and tried to reassure her that she had gotten the order correct at the till but somehow it got lost and the other waitress was very aggressive. This was responded to with 'that's fine, your sandwich is being prepared right now '.
We left with the sandwiches, ham free and tea cut and realised that throughout the whole very unnecessarily unpleasant experience, not once did we hear a single apology. We left feeling like we had walked into an Italian restaurant asking for McDonald's. The problem was, we went to a tea room, asking for tea sandwiches.
A real shame. But we did not let it ruin our stay in Torquay! Don't let this tea shop and their terrible...

Every time me and my partner come to Burridges we are always blown away by just how good the food tastes. My go to on the current menu - the cubano.just thinking about it makes my mouth water. My only wish is that I could make it last longer but that's on me not them. What a sweet sweet addiction it is.
Now. I'm not a coffee drinker myself (more of a tea boy) but from what I understand the coffee is to die for. The one I hear the most talk about? The Biscoffee. "The perfect caffeine and sugar hit" the taste, the creaminess, the drink-ee-ness, 10 out of 10.
Cannot leave out the staff here. The stars of the show, smiling faces, great humour and epic manor. All absolute rock stars. You'll never leave here thinking any less of them. Only better.
As a bonus piece. Every time I visit the place I like to stare at is by the till. A delightful little shelf. What does it house you may ask? Bread. Carbohydratey nuggets of goodness. My favourite? The focaccia. THE KIMCHI AND CHEDDAR FOCACCIA. my goodness. I love it. Absolute heaven.
Do yourself a favour and get down to Burridges and spend all your money there. Would break my heart if they ever lost business as they genuinely deserve to...
Read moreCame with 3 of my friends so a group of teenagers which usually cafes show they don't like but the staff were soo friendly and down to earth - I can confidently say it's the friendliest cafe team in Torquay! The only issue was the prices of the sandwiches and toasties, we would have loved to make it a tradition but £12 for a toastie is a bit out of our budget (on minimum u18 wage ....) The blueberry muffin was incredible and one of my favs Ive ever tried, the cornflake blondie was quite nice but some inside the base felt a bit stale We got the: cheese scone (delish 8/10), cheesy leek and mushroom (very nice but couldn't really taste the mushroom 6.8/10), the triple H (scranalicious 9/10) and the coronation chickpea (my only thing was I was expecting raisins!! I love raisins!!! 8.6/10) overall the toastie bread was delish, the sandwich was quite nice, salad was delish delish delish Ooh we also got drinks!! Biscoff mocha was quite nice but couldn't really taste biscoff or chocolate just coffee, brown sugar latte was brilliant tho!
Thank you so much sorry for this long review we...
