Early October, early evening , midweek visit. The good bits. 1. Food was really good. 2 Service to the table was quick 3. 5 star hygiene rating. Bad bits. 1. Your website states “70-seater restaurant has been completely refurbished” in what decade was that? It’s probably the worst interior of any Indian restaurant, anywhere in the world that I've been in. Plaster on walls cracking, bits of it have come off, filth on the bottom of the doors, dirty walls, dirty radiators and the bathroom is like something from the 70’s.. completely refurbished, that’s a stretch. 2. The older gentlemen. Raj, as you studied business, you will know how members of staff are vitally important to the success of any business, then you need to sort this out, family member or part owner, or whatever, he should not be serving customers. What a miserable, miserable man, it’s like he simply can’t be arsed smiling. Seeing as the food was really nice, I handed him more than a 20% cash tip. Sod all reaction, zip, nada. Nothing! Based on the experience overall. Hygiene rating 5* Food 5 Value for money 5. Restaurant ambience 1 Staff, 1 (older gentleman killed that score for all of you) 3.4 total feedback Would I recommend your restaurant to others? despite the bad bits, yes I would, only because the food is that good, sadly letdown by the refurbishment claim, and the staff member.

Utterly disappointing and lacklustre service. We were made to feel like we were doing them a favour by dining in the restaurant. I mean, I don’t even know where to begin. It was like a bad sketch show. Zero warmth from the staff, questioning why we would order only 3 popadoms (there were 6 of us and I didn’t realise every person needed one) gristly chewy prawns (gross), being handed our plates rather than placing them, seated in a run-down room off the main restaurant. Having to wait 10 minutes before someone even can to check-in with us. Apparently, you need to order your food first and drinks 5 minutes later. Coca-Cola was warm with no option of ice (asked for ice twice and waited 5 minutes for it to arrive) Fever Tree Ginger Ale came with ice but arrived already poured. For all we knew it wasn’t actually Fever Tree. Their only saving grace (apart from decent naan breads) was our party of 6 excluding myself said they enjoyed their meal but was no comparison to what they were used to at home in India. Also, get a uniform for your staff, couldn’t actually tell staff from customers. Will never return and will never recommend. Terrible!

We ordered chicken madras, tandoori butter chicken, mushroom pilau, plain naan and peshwari naan. Chicken madras was perfect. I really liked it. Butter chicken was a bit too sweet, but still very nice. Mushroom rice was quite simple, compared to other places. However, it was the best naan I have ever had. That, alone, was worth the experience. Really recommend to get a naan with your food. Coke was not great, as didn't have bubbles.

I ate here twice last week while vacationing in York. On the first night we had a variety of dishes including sheek kabob, mixed tandoori grill, garlic nan, garlic rice and imami lamb. The flavors were very good, and we enjoyed the meal. Definitely worth eating there.

BUT, that's not why we chose to eat there. We have been discussing what is the true heat level of Indian (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladesh) dishes which no one wants to serve in most restaurants. So, we went back for a Chicken Pathia and Chicken Ceylon, plain rice and tandoor prawns.

Well, well! The Pathia chicken was medium to hot spicy and the flavor was in the sauce, little in the chicken. But, the Ceylon was SMOKING hot and just kept on going. I've eaten Szechuan pepper dishes of a variety of types and this was blazing. It didn't bite, but the heat just kept building. Now I know how serious Indian food can be. In truth my wife couldn't handle it, but we are both pleased and satisfied to have finally come face to face with the real deal. And no, we don't need to go back to that heat level. My guess is that is was in the 150k to 200K level on the Scoville scale. SMOKIN hot. I fared much better than my wife but needed a napkin to mop up the moisture coming off my head.

We enjoyed the restaurant and highly recommend it. Will return if we return to York. And no, unless you're the real deal, the Ceylon is above your pay grade.

Excellent service, recommendations and interactions with the staff and owner. The food was very well made and...

RUDE miserable and bored staff. Our 2nd time eating here whilst our trip to york for the weekend. Firstly I would like to start by saying how pleasant the young lad was who was working, he helped us to our table and got us a drink straight away. The rest of the staff (owners) didn’t bother coming over at all for at least 15’’mins to ask if we wanted starters. We ordered our starters and once we had eaten they had taken the plates away we waited at least 30-45 minutes for our main course. There was a few other people with us in the back room. Whilst waiting for our mains a couple came in and sat at the side of us. Whilst we was eating, they had got there main course straight away and so did the other table across before we even had ours. I think it is a shambles how they work. They go from one table to another bringing out the food when it’s ready in random order. Once our main course arrived the chicken shashlick that I had was just warm, and the chicken wasn’t very nice at all. My partners meal wasn’t nice either, they knocked £4!!! Yes £4 of our bill. For food that we didn’t eat? The card machine then didn’t work and lost connection once trying to get to pay for our bill. He put the payment through and they passed me my card and walked off round the back to carry on serving. Didn’t even say sorry or nothing to us. I think for paying £55 for a meal we didn’t like and the service to have not one meal taken off is appalling. We will not be...

The food is really good however the service is disappointing. We had booked a table for 7 o clock the previous day. The table we were shown to wasn't set when we arrived even thought we waited 10 minutes to be seated but the table next to us was set. Side plates and knives and forks were placed at the side of the table for us to set ourselves. We ordered a bottle of wine which was brought to the table in a wine cooler but not opened or poured out just left on the table. The staff are not organised quite chaotic. The table next to us queried their bill as they had been charged 16 pound something and didnt know what it was. They had been charged for our wine we did have a little laugh about it but however when we got our bill the wine was 19.98 not the 16.50 it should have been. When we had finished our meal we asked for the bill when we received it we were told to go to the front entrance to pay it as it was a card payment. When we got to the front entrance the commotion was horrendous the card machine wasnt working and there were about 12 people squashed in to this small entrance. We were told that they was a cash point next door at sainsbury's. When I returned with the cash I couldnt get back into the restaurant as they was about 6 delivery drivers waiting for orders in the doorway and outside. No social distancing whatsoever and I didnt feel safe at all. I wouldn't...
