Had Room 25, overlooking parking lot in backyard. Not exactly best scenary outide of window but such is inherent nature of many such buildings in UK. The room got open view with no traffic noise.
Room interior and service decent enough for a family run hotel inside an old building. Bathroom basin was partially blocked and they had it cleared the next day when told. I think the blockage was down stream so the work was done probably outside the room.
Breakfast was nice surprise. Buffet table with cold dishes and toasts etc AND then you can order English breakfast cooked to order.
By default, they do not enter your room during your stay (except perhaps long stay?) but you can leave soiled towels outside the door and they will put daily supply in a bag (paper roll, cookie, coffee, tea bags etc) and clean towels outside the door. They did say daily cleaning in room can be done on request. Am fine with the arrangment.
Carpark spaces (free... I booked direct) are not sufficient during weekend when occupancy rate was high. If you cannot find a space, you can park in front of other cars and leave your key to staff. Works well enough for me. Parking lot is secured by an electric gate so you don't have to put key into a faraday bag to prevent theft.
The driveway into hotel is walled on both sides. As traveller from Asia, I find it to be a bit narrow even to my hatchback rental car. But then I saw other guests parked a Volvo SUV so I guess it depends on skill and confidence.
They also have 3 rooms, I think, in a separate one storey "cottage" type building in backyard. The doors open to the parking lot. May be fine to some guests but I can imagine some others may not prefer. It also means a short open distance (
Read moreThe location was brilliant here. We walked with our suitcases from the train station and it took us all of 10 minutes. It takes you around town rather than through it, so it was quick. Walking into town was so close, 5 minutes tops to the town walls. Probably less. The price paid for the location was excellent. The breakfast was ok. You get a choice of cooked food which was quite yummy and then a continental buffet. The buffet part was average. I've had better but I've also had worse. The room was spacious and bathroom large. It is basically what you would expect from a 3 star hotel. The room was ok but a bit dated for my liking, We were hoping for one of the renovated rooms that we seen online but it wasn't. However I feel like maybe the bathroom was updated. The staff were all so lovely except one man who was on reception early in the morning one morning. I wanted to sit in the lounge area at 6am to do some work as I didn't want to wake anyone in my room, and the man on reception made me feel like it was such an imposition for him to allow me to do it. I didn't need anything from him or anyone at all, I just needed to sit and work quietly. He huffed and puffed and sighed and I didn't think he was going to let me but...
Read moreWe had a lovely stay at this hotel at the beginning of September following a recommendation from family after they had visited a few weeks earlier. The hotel and room was very clean and of a high standard and the staff were friendly and accommodating with our luggage and breakfast options. They were extremely helpful in storing our luggage securely so that we could explore the city on our final day and as a vegetarian/vegan they had oat milk and non-dairy spread as breakfast options as well as cooked items and a lovely buffet spread. My partner enjoyed the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon and we were welcomed both during the day and late at night. We were so glad to choose an independent hotel for this trip and look forward to returning on other visits. Each day staff replenished toilet rolls and hot drink and biscuit supplies without us having to visit reception and our bathroom was very clean, immaculate and modern. For a hotel that is so close to the city and its amenities with a Sainsbury's local on the doorstep, honestly this hotel deserves lots of great reviews and guests. Thank you very much and we look forward to returning soon. Best...
