Booked this pub/hotel on a whim. We married in York last year and wanted to return for a few days for our anniversary.||This hotel is ideal - very central, everything is walkable and no more than 10 minutes away. The cathedral is literally a couple of minutes away.||The free parking is an absolute godsend as York is notoriously difficult to park, and with me being pregnant, it was ideal having the car close by and not having to walk distances with suitcases.||The manager checked us in and was friendly and really helpful. We had a drink in the pub and there is a great selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. ||We stayed in the Bootham Room for 2 nights, a lovely spacious room, with high ceilings and big windows opening out on to a street view of the busy road. We had been left a lovely note and some chocolates which was so unexpected and kind!||With children at home I'm used to having disturbed sleep. I was surprised to find actually, there was barely any noise from the road outside (we slept with the window open slightly too) and I couldn't hear a thing from the pub below despite it being busy when we went to sleep on our second night.||I would say the room was much nicer than I expected - we aren't fussy and would be more than happy with a basic room, but it was truly lovely. I don't think the photos on booking.com do it justice! It's really large, felt like staying in a proper old fashioned Georgian property with all the gold and red. I loved it! The room and bathroom were very clean and had all the necessary amenities: teas/coffees, tv, wardrobe etc. I really don't have anything bad to say about our stay here, it was wonderful! The bed is on a bit of a funny angle, but we live in an 18th century house so are used to wonky floors and walls! And the shower didn't seem to drain so well - not sure if it needed unblocking or just old pipes 🙂 ||The breakfast was fantastic both days. Huge portions, steaming hot and everything fresh. Between us across the days we had the full English, Greek yogurt & fruit, eggs benedict, and avocado and poached eggs on toast. All absolutely delicious. The conservatory is a lovely place to have breakfast, and the beer garden at the back is large and clean, great place to have a drink on a nice day!||Around the clock the staff seem to be working hard to clean and tidy around throughout the pub and rooms. It really was very well kept, yet the staff always had time for a smile and a hello. ||We absolutely wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and will be recommending it to our friends. What a hidden gem. Thank you to all the staff for such a...
Read moreMy favourite pub in the city! The pub itself is a treasure, in a city with 365 pubs its easy for them to all blend into one and be forgettable, but not this one! The interior design is welcoming and has that traditional pub feel, which embraces you and welcomes you in for a drink. The beer garden is 'the longest in York' and rightly so, it's massive. There are plenty of tables and umbrellas to shelter from the sun, and sit down and drink.
The staff were the best, each and everyone of them. Whilst I didn't catch all of their names, they all made an effort to greet me, have a chat at the bar and wished us well at the end of the night - something which you don't get very often these days. The manageress was outstanding, you can tell her passion for the trade, and her willingness to go above and beyond to make your stay as best it can be.
The selection of draught beers, ciders and ales is brilliant, with something for everyone and their 'cocktail of the day' is always something new, different and delicious!
I visited here several times throughout my visit to York, and kept coming back for the reasons mentioned above, and plan to go again upon my next visit to the city.
I cannot thank the staff enough for their efforts, and wish them...
Read moreStayed here for four nights the hotel is very clean and the staff were very helpful and attentive.|Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice and served in a very quirky conservatory |The pub was always busy with a real buzz to it and so handy for the centre of York 200 metres away|The added bonus was parking for guests we parked our car and it didn’t move all the time we were there as we chose to use the bus and train.|The room we stayed in although it looked as if it had been decorated in the last couple of years was tired and was in need of some up to date furniture and the bed had a very soft foam mattress which just sank so gave you no support and I found it very difficult to sleep although Hubby slept like a log.|As you don’t stay in your room all day the decor and furniture were not a game changer and I think the location gives this little place...
