On the spur of the moment we decided on a Saturday morning to see if we could get a hotel in Scarborough for that night. The Clifton had availability on line and the price including breakfast was very reasonable so we booked it. The staff were welcoming and our twin room was pleasant enough: appeared to have a new carpet, the beds were comfy and there were certainly plenty of things in the room: fridge, coffee machine, tea, coffee and kettle, hairdryer, a big built wardrobe/cupboard with ironing board, extra bedding, a heater I think and plenty of hangers and drawers for storage. The bathroom appears to have been newly done out, big walk in shower, no bath and completely covered in Mermaid board: actually a nice job has been done. The shower was excellent, however, the room appeared to have no ventilation and the window has been painted shut decades ago - big disadvantage with such a good hot shower. Unusually for this day and age the toiletries are individual bottles and soaps not the wall mounted push style you tend to get now. TV is only freesat, this is all we have at home so a little disappointing as we usually like to indulge in channel junk that we don't to see when away and we have the time. The breakfast room and foyer etc are lovely, suspect newly done, staff great and breakfast everything you need without too much fuss. They seemed to have a policy of letting people with dogs have breakfast in the foyer but not the main room, which I totally agree with, no dogs in the dining room.|It's an old hotel with all the difficulties that come with it regarding rooms, decoration, windows etc but an effort has been made and it has a very welcome, comfortable feel. I would however criticise their decision not to give more parking info on the phone and also website: we very nearly didn't book since when I phoned before booking on-line, all their spaces were full and no further info was given. In the morning reception said they preferred to explain options in person: do they not understand that to be 'in person' when you have arrived in a vehicle you already need to have parked! Since we were only staying one night, arriving after 7pm and leaving before 9am, parking was not an issue as we could park for free in the plentiful disc zones nearby - this information could have been given on the phone. There are various options for parking depending on how long and what times you need it - assuming you can't get a space in their own carpark. If you were staying a week and not moving the car, I suspect you would pay some substantial money but if you can time your arrivals and departures or are going for days out you just have to pay attention to the restrictions. For a short stay in this area, we would definitely consider this...
Read moreWe booked here at short notice after taxi-ing a family member rather than drive another 2½hrs back home across unlit moors in the dark. We booked at an incredibly reasonable rate for a double bedroom, through their group Britania Hotels. The Hotel is in a great location on seafront at the end of a row overlooking the North Bay and Castle. There was some private parking at £6 a night however we had to park on street, as all booked, however the hotel obliged us with a disc to park for free until we were to check out as disc holder parking only on street during daylight hours. The reception desk were very pleasant very helpful booking our breakfast time in advance. There was also a large lounge overlooking the sea where you could relax with a drink. The hotel is of a vintage style including the lift, although it appears old, it is very clean and welcoming. There were a few bits that looked tired and could do with a spruce up, but it didn't detract from our stay at all really. Our room was on 4th floor and in it we found we had an even bigger superking bed than booked, with an extra smaller room adjoining with a 2rd bed all with a sea view even though just 2 of us. An absolute bargain! We could see North Bay and the sealife centre about 1½mile away from hotel room up the coast. The bay was lit up at night with fairy lights and looked lovely. The room had good firm beds ideal for back sufferers, there was a kettle with tea+coffee on a long desk table, although could have provided a little more milk and glasses for water or juice. There was a Tv in both of the rooms. So if 3 stayed would've been even a better deal. There was also a fan provided too and window opener, as no aircon. Sammy seagull liked to pass the window and say hello too 😁 🦤 Breakfast was served in a large room with brass chandeliers and at the table but you could have as much or little as you wanted including cereal toast and full English breakfast. Just a slight gripe on breakfast as mushrooms too wet, not drained, hash browns too greasy and sausage was cheap, otherwise all the other items were good and for the price for B&B at £61 was great. However I would have paid an extra few quid say £65 for B&B if decent sausage, mushrooms in butter and...
Read moreThe room itself was nice. Issues with the bathroom, toilet wouldn't flush when we got there, as the lever kept falling off inside the cistern. Remember to bring bodywash as the dispenser in the bath was empty. One of the bedside lamps didn't work. Nothing we couldn't not cope with for one night. Then the worst thing was the fire alarm, it went off about 11pm for about 5 mins. We got up to leave the room, an everyone else came out asking if we got to go, then it stopped. Got back in bed, an 20 mins later it went off again for another couple of mins. Finally fell asleep only for it to go off a 3rd time for another couple of mins. Still have no idea why, an nothing was said by staff or reception. We was on the 4th floor with a great view. But the stairs are seriously a killer especially wearing a mask. It does have a lift, but that's hit an miss if it wants to work. I called it on the ground floor an was stood there a few minutes waiting for it to come. Gave up an took the stairs in the end. An while I remember, they request you leave your room key in a box near the exit of the building, an carry a slip of paper to get your key back upon return. Now consider when we returned an showed them the slip of paper, the key was still in the box where we left them. It's not a secure box either, open topped, where anyone could just reach in a take your key an go empty your remove if they wanted. We'd been gone for a couple of hours so if the worst did happen they'd be long gone. That's one area that needs serious improvement, a secure box or at least empty it an keep the keys in reception. The location is great though, an the views where great looking along...
