My partner and I decided to go here after having seen the pretty impressive reviews online. On top of that, it looked quite private which was what we were looking for for a quiet dinner. Bear in mind, this restaurant has a higher star rating than Gordon Ramsey’s Michelin Steakhouse which made us have high expectations. However it was not really as expected. It was incredibly noisy and busy to the point I couldn’t actually hear our waiters or my partner talking, and if I am honest it felt as though we were moved a bit like cattle from beginning to end, which was exemplified by the fact we had multiple waiters and the narrow corridors and confusing entrance. It was also rather unpleasant to see the toilets first thing before even entering the restaurant. 😵💫
When it comes to food, my partner was impressed with his starter, but we were both not keen on mine. I had pane e olive which was honestly two dimensional. 🫠It was literally just bread and olives, no butter or anything. The olives were also described as marinated in lemon and herbs, and the ones I was given were NO WAY lemon or herb as they tasted like the basic olive oil olives from a supermarket. 💀 In addition, our main and deserts were okay but incredibly expensive for what it was.
The staff were not impressive. Definitely not as pleasant as everyone was making out in the reviews either. They were quite abrupt and made a few comments which my partner and I felt were odd and inappropriate. Considering it’s total price of £110 for just both of us, it would have been nice to have felt attended to and not the opposite.
I honestly do not know how this is as highly rated as it is, and it feels more as though people liked going there to say they had been there rather than actually going for the food. If you are visiting York, it is not an ideal introduction. Honestly disappointed! I feel this is more for locals rather than tourists looking to...
Read moreFoods very average. Some meals served cold not much creativity just like most Italian chains. Regarding the staff some are very arrogant and some are just lifeless. Not a pleasant experience. 10% service charge added. This is not America! Spent £600 here in one evening and honestly would be treat better at Wetherspoons. We were rushed. 3 courses. Wine etc but told us we had a time limit of 80 minutes as soon as we sat at our booked table. Ruined the special occasion. Much better restaurants about in York. Ten years ago I remember this place was worth visiting. Not so much anymore. It’s still living in its shadow. Times have changed and it needs to correct itself and improve. I wouldn’t return. The staff are awful to be around. Had it not of been a pre booked special occasion I’d of walked out when the waitress tutted and rolled her eyes threatening we had a time limit. Table was booked for 7 we arrived at 6:55pm and at 7:02pm she was angry wee weren’t ready to order we were all still settling down and greeting each other. Italian food is very generic and basic something I’d call poverty food however which can easily be made at home, yet they seem to think it’s the greatest food in the world. Here I could have made better at home which is not what you expect when paying this price at a restaurant. Had the service been better and the food served hot the experience would have been better I’m not saying the food is bad it’s just what you expect from an Italian but no different to a cheaper Italian franchise. However other Italians in York have really blown me away with flavour and most of all good service. I wouldn’t go out of your...
Read moreLovely authentic atmosphere, supported by the decor and theme. You are likely to hear snippets of Italian spoken.
Waiting service was friendly and good but, as it is so popular, you might find you need to wait a while at times - tell them if you are in a hurry; I'm sure they would try to accommodate you.
The food is fabulous. Good pizzas are common enough, but there are a wide range of food options (less so if you are vegetarian or vegan, though there are vegetarian pizzas). The best vegetarian dish to talk about, on the menu, is undoubtedly the cheese and pear ravioli (Fiocci formaggio & pere). It contains a blue cheese, a parmesan and some other cheeses, along with some pear - it is coated in a really nice sauce too. The pasta wrapper is wonderfully thin so the focus is on the flavour of the filling, which has a sweetness to it from the pear. The blue cheese blends in really well so does not dominate the flavour. I am not a fan of ravioli as I usually find the pasta dominating and the filling bland, but this is truly the best ravioli I've ever had, and I would happily choose it myself next time I visit. (This time, my wife chose it and gave me some to try). The portions are generous and there are some nice sides too, such as the Rocket and Parmesan Salad.
Note, the borrowed phone camera I used wasn't very good in low light and got the colours wrong. I hope the photos give you an idea of the dishes I'm talking about though. The wonderful ravioli I've discussed above is the photo with a pile of roundish shapes that have come out surprisingly orange...
