I've eaten Neapolitan style pizza all over the world. It's my favourite kind of pizza and so I was overjoyed to be sat down at Dough Eyed after a long day. Here follows my review, and if you read the owner's reply, you'll see that they think I know nothing about pizza or how to eat it. We ordered margherita pizzas and a rocket and parmesan salad. The salad was supposed to be dressed with balsamic vinegar but there was none. The pizza base was very good, but unfortunately the topping just sloughed off. I'd describe my meal as "margherita soup with pizza crust dippers". The whole point of pizza is to be able to eat it by hand, without cutlery; clearly impossible at this place. I politely suggest you tear your mozzarella into smaller chunks and distribute it more evenly to prevent the sloughing. I'd have raised my complaints with the staff, if they'd approached us after serving us. Unfortunately we had to pay up front and so the last we saw of any staff was after they dumped the food at our table.

Me and my work colleagues had visited York for a short few days on a training course, we decided to try Dough Eyed as the last meal we would have in York - and it did not disappoint. I was greeted and served by Charlie throughout the meal, who was not only welcoming (we had a mutual connection from our hometowns down south), but was also very attentive in finding us a good spot to sit down and took our orders in a very timely fashion. The overall experience from start to finish was superb. The food was incredible, I was not expecting the Thick crust to be as light and airy as it was - it was to die for. Both of my friends had both agreed that their pizzas were equally as amazing. I would seriously recommend this place to anyone looking for good, efficient service and a great place to eat whilst having a good night out in York. Thank you to Charlie and all the staff at Dough Eyed.

Incredible food - had simply the tastiest take out pizza we’ve ever had (named as Nduja punk which was a sublime explosion of flavour) and, genuinely, a dessert, which can only be described as the dessert of dreams ! It was a banoffee caramel and biscoff topping also on a light chewy pizza base and, believe me when I tell you, this is seriously ‘next level’ stuff - this was the best pizza and dessert take out we have ever tasted. Wish I lived in York - I’d be in this place every week. Also, while waiting on the order, you could sense the very laid back and relaxed atmosphere, what with the tasteful decor and subdued lighting, you could tell it made people feel like they were at a friends house or dinner party. It was obvious from the bustle of fresh pizza and drinks flowing every few minutes that people were making plenty of fuss about how good everything was.

Service staff are attentive, warm, and approachable and clearly passionate about what they do. Beer selection is fantastic and it was lovely to see Italian beers mixed with local beers. It's always nice to have a choice of a fruity sour beer too, I love a lager but to have the choice of both was fantastic. We chose this place as our valentines day meal and we really were not disappointed. We're both really not pizza people in general, but we were meant to visit this place before it formerly shut. We were so excited when it came back as we had always said we were disappointed we never had a chance to go. This is pizza. We don't like pizza as it's always the takeaway deep pan, pepperoni, greasy pizza. This was gooey (not greasy) with fresh ingredients with a refreshing beer (or cocktail) to wash it down. So we do like pizza, it just has to be Neapolitan. I can understand that some of the public will be confused by this pizza, but that's expected considering us British people tend to never leave our comfort zone when it comes to food. I wouldn't be personally concerned about those people though, because simply you either get it or you don't. If you like greasy meat feast pizzas and expect that quality, then go to a local cheap takeaway. The hot honey/salami pizza is the best pizza either of us have ever eaten in our lives. The only thing I would possibly note is that this style of pizza can be hard to cut/eat as it's very floppy (it should be) so may not be for you if you can't handle getting a bit messy with your food. I also would have enjoyed chips, but again this might not be the most authentic and I understand if the staff believe that wouldn't be the best move for the business. But, chips are not a reason to give this place any less than 5 stars and like I said, I can understand why they may not serve these. The only other thing I can think that people may complain about is the place being quite tight, but you're in York... every building is tiny and tight here lol. So glad these guys are back open and will definitely be back for a chill afternoon with a beer and pizza.

Update: the best pizza in York. I've lost count how many times I have been this year now. Will always come back, haven't even bothered trying any other pizza places in York because what's the point when Dough Eyed is so good, cheap, the beer is amazing, and the staff are genuinely lovely? Also I don't want to cheat on my...

Stupidly didn’t book lunch in advance on a Saturday and stumbled (or should I say….shambled? HAHA! Cuz, y’know…it’s next to the shambles….ok it was funnier in my head) upon this place, not yet open at lunch which meant with 5 mins of doorstep camping, I was treated to the best Pizza I’ve ever eaten.

Super thick crust, like a wedge so the Pizza looks more akin to a bowl than a plate, but with a super thin base and delicious toppings slightly more adventurous to the norm. It may have ruined pizza for me forever as I feel like my pizza eating experience has peaked and I’ll now forever be chasing that doughy cheesy high Dough Eyed gave me forever more.

Some words of caution though. The restaurant is tiny, so got busy real quick and had to queue slightly awkwardly on the tiny stairs for the single toilet. May also be difficult to get a large contingent in, (there were 6 of us at a squeeze) but fine if there’s two or three of you. It also doesn’t really cater for kids, no mini pizzas, high chairs, sauces ketchup or anything but it feels a little unfair to criticise for that as it doesn’t really pretend to be anything other than what it was set up for and the staff were super accommodating in putting up with my two gremlins and finding a small gap for a small stroller. (No way you’d get one of those massive prams in but there is a little outside seating). Can imagine going for dinner and a pint and it being super cozy in the evening.

I remember thinking the bill was steep at the time because it’s certainly not the cheapest pizza in the world, i think I’d paid about £100 for 5 pizzas and a round of drinks but looking back it must average out at a standard meal out, it’s in a premium locale and I cannot emphasise enough just how good that meal was.

Go. You...

I’d like to mention a few things: • Their love and attention to detail for the Pizza is insane, they prioritise puffy crusts, leopard spotting, and good flavour profiles to an extreme. The prosciutto had a great contrast between the fresh rocket and rich tomato base - the salami also was a joy to taste. Super happy about the food. • Staff maintained a friendly demeanour throughout service, making sure we were satisfied. Frequently they made conversation with customers, which really brought a communal atmosphere missing from most restaurants - I’m sure the fact it is also a bar helps! Treat them well please, people making things of this quality deserve gratitude (in pay and manners). • The presentation for the drinks was great, making the whole experience better alongside their refreshing flavours. My only critique is that the Margarita’s salt on its glass should probably be mentioned to the customer (my partner wasn’t aware and wasn’t too fond of it, not all places do that); as well in my opinion some drinks are filled with a little too much ice that dilutes the flavour over time (such as the White Russian, which quickly became less creamy). • Lastly I think the small menu simplifies customer choice and elevates food quality.

TLDR; Pizza is amazing and service is welcoming -...
