Ela by Hellas Taverna — Restaurant in England

Had an absolutely outstanding lunch at Hellas Taverna today. Family meal for 3 adults and 2 children (aged 3 and 7). The food was superb and is reason enough to seek out this restaurant and try everything on the menu.

The salads and sharing starters were delicious. Refreshing, with real depth of flavour and texture.

The mains - kleftiko and lamb chops.

The kleftiko was divine. Succulent, tender and full of flavour. The jus was deep and rich in flavour and the vegetables melt in the mouth.

Tha lamb chops are something else. There are two varieties to choose from. “English” or “Greek”. The English chops are fine. Normal size. Full of flavour and plenty of meat, but they are blown out of the water by the Greek chops. Small, from Much younger and much more tender milk fed lamb. The chops are small and delicate and are grilled to perfection. You get twice as many so the same amount of meat as if you order the English chops but you’ll never taste anything like it ever again - unless you come back for more!

However no matter how great the food is it’s still not the best thing about this restaurant - the service is breathtaking. This is a family restaurant in the real sense of the word. Run by a family with love, care and passion but equally welcoming to families of all shapes and sizes. Nothing is too much trouble for the owners and they go out of their way to ensure that the usual stresses and worries that can come with dining with small children or children with additional needs simply don’t occur here. Been coming here for years. It's an unassuming place but gets the modern Greek vibe nailed and all those who work here are probably some of the friendliest and most welcoming I've ever met.

Then the food arrives and it's a whole other level. If you're not sure whar to get, make sure you're suitably hungry then get the meze. All the dishes are good and it's worth the selection. My personal favourite is the Souffle although that probably highlights how, even with all the complex and nuanced flavours on offer in other dishes, I'm still a child and heart... give me copious cheese, pasta and ham any day! Don't worry if your tastes are more mature than mine as you'll enjoy most of what's on offer.

My wife and I have come here countless times, bringing friends and family on multiple occasions, and there hasn't been a single person who hasn't enjoyed the experience despite a few of them not really having ventured out before when it comes to food. We were in M&S Handford Dean and the queue was ridiculous so we put "food" into Maps and Ela came up. We were so pleased it did. The host was very attentive and helpful. The food was delicious. The place is immaculately clean, including the washrooms. Cloth napkins are a lovely touch. The cocktails were great. The only warning we have is to go there hungry :-) We will certainly go back.

Parking is available for 2 hours behind the nearby shopping centre. 200 yards walk. There is a private dining room upstairs that is available for functions. There is an outdoor dining area. There is no obvious wheelchair access as there is a step at the main entrance and the restrooms are upstairs.
