What a lovely looking building, visited York on sunday 16th. After a long walk around seeing some lovely buildings we stumbled across this place. We fancied a lovely roast dinner. A sign at the door saying sorry we are full. So we decided to try again later (thinking this place must be the place with popular demand to eat. After walking around more the sign was still out. So i called in and asked about how long for a table of two. My luck was in. The guy on the bar said 20 mins. Then a lady came over and said we have one now. Wow. I was excited and hungry and ready for a good roast dinner by this point. We got taken to the table. Didn't seem busy which was odd with a sign saying full. The larger selection was poor. Myself and partner looked at the menu but we already knew we wanted a roast dinner. So we went with that and two chardonnay wines. The wine arrived small. Never got asked on size. Then after a short while the roast beef came out with a flat cheap bought Yorkshire pudding and beef swimming in gravy. Presentation was poor. Then followed a metal dish with carrots roast potatoes and broccoli. 4 little roast potatoes and two broccoli stems each and about 6 carrots each. Where's the rest? I was told stuffing was with the dinner didnt get any. The beef was ok. Nothing to scream about. The whole meal was bland and boring big time. I asked for mint sauce. Never came. No check back was given on the food or when paying either. If that's the poor standard of roast served, i wouldn't bother and go else where. Awful roast. Left still hungry. And felt robbed. Two roasts two small wines £35. Left me and my partner very...

Visited Gert & Henry’s today after several years away from York. This used to be a regular stop when passing through the city.

Upon entering with a friend, we were abruptly instructed to “wait there, WAIT THERE!” by the man behind the bar/till. Such treatment felt patronising, as if we were schoolchildren.

Once seated, we received prompt service, and our food was delivered quickly. We ordered scones and tea, and the scones were perfectly cooked. However, it was disappointing that such a charming venue in a prime location used cheap plastic packets for strawberry jam with their cream teas. Investing in bulk jam jars and serving the jam in nice dishes would significantly enhance the experience. Also, using metal tea pots/milk pots gives a real caf feel - a few quid invested in some nice china will see some proper return on investment + some.

While enjoying our cream teas, we noticed the same man behind the bar repeatedly barking “wait” at every customer who entered, without any greeting or pleasantries. This behaviour became monotonous and was quite rude.

On a positive note, the young girl who served us was delightful and deserves recognition.

At £5.95 for a cream tea, the price is very reasonable. Given the central location, the establishment could afford to charge a bit more and provide a higher...

This wasn't the best experience for us. We were passing by and were drawn in by the authentic charm of the exterior and the specials board which had mussels in a white wine or tomato sauce. We were shown to a table upstairs and once seated we realised how cold the place was, even though we had a radiator close by, it was barely warm. Almost everyone had their coats or jackets on. We ordered the potato, leek and carrot soup which was really thick but not a great flavour and its dark lumpy appearance was a bit off putting. Second course I had the mussels in tomato sauce. The first few were not very warm but i thought this was because they had been sitting for a while, the next few were warmer but further down they were hardly even warm. I sent it back since they hadnt been heated properly. After the mediocre soup this really spoiled the meal for me. My husband had steak sandwiches and they were just ok. The meat was warm and tender but the bread was somewhat soggy. The guys serving were friendly enough and the mussels were removed from the bill but with so many fantastic places to eat in York, they need to up their game. I would not return to this restaurant and neither would i recommend. Cold and draughty atmosphere and well below average standard of food, i would...

Gert and Henry’s has the most perfect location in the middle of the market, a stones throw from Parliament Street in York. Some establishments would take advantage of this and charge an arm and a leg for precious little, yet we enjoyed a relaxed brunch, each with a main course, a coffee and, somewhat later, a tea, for around £13 each including a tip. if I was being picky, I wouldn’t have minded my bread being a little thicker and scrambled egg perhaps a little more runny, but that’s a personal thing and it was decent food at a very acceptable price. What’s more, the Guide Dogs in our party were accepted without question, the staff were friendly and helpful, and we never felt rushed away from our table despite taking our time. The complimentary doughnuts brought with our tea towards the end were also a pleasant and welcome surprise. Overall it was a pleasant and affordable spot to while away a few hours whilst enjoying a perfectly acceptable brunch, and I suspect I will be back.

£14.95 for what I can only describe as a child's portion at best for something that tasted like the bacon fat in which the meat was prepared in and the most tasteless of sauces, I would be embarrassed to even send it out least of all call it a meal, wouldn't even be big enough for a starter. Then to charge an extra fiver for a side of garlic bread and extra for gravy to go with my mother's meal which should have been part of the meal. Nobody came over to ask how the meal was, they needed to be called over and told how poor the meals were. The only tip they need is to take the criticism as a learning curve and not to speak to my mother the way the guy on the till did because that was down right disgusting, manners cost nothing and so do apologies, nevermind smugness and arrogance towards the opposite sex as that's down right discrimination.

Really disappointed in this place. So many other options nearby and we opted for Gert and Henry’s since it was in a nice spot by the market. Staff were friendly in contrast to some of the reviews here, but the food was really lacking. My wife had a ham, lettuce and mustard sandwich which was served with a sad looking salad and three crisps (I’m not joking). The mustard was missing and the ham was the really cheap watery kind. I had the mixed seafood salad, picture is attached and I’ll let the photo do the talking.... Nice place for a coffee or tea but I can’t recommend the food at all. £30 for three poor meals and 3 soft drinks, go elsewhere.
