I went to Lakeland spice cuisine as I’d seen lots of good reviews online. We went to reserve a table the night before and informed them that we would be a group of 7 people. They advised us we would have to arrive at 5:30 the next day as they had a big group coming later and we agreed to this.
The next day when we arrived, we ordered 7 naans, 2 curries and 2 mixed starters to share. This is because we had 2 young children with us and we were not very hungry as we’d had a late lunch.
After placing the order, a worker who was not serving us came up to us and informed us that they cannot accept our order as we had not ordered enough food. This is baffling to me as no one else had mentioned this to us and there was nothing on the menu or online to state there was a minimum amount of food we had to order. We explained this to the worker and he informed us that they are a very busy restaurant despite there only being 6 other people there. He said he could pack the food up and we could take it to go however, we were staying in a hotel and had stayed in town all day and paid for parking for this meal. Therefore, we asked how many other curries we would have to order to be allowed service in the restaurant and the worker said we would need to order 4 curries altogether. We then asked if we could do this and he said yes.
Around 10 minutes later the food arrived and it was all packed up! We asked why as we had ordered the 2 extra curries and the worker said he had already packed the food up. He was not budging on this and we felt forced to leave! One of the women I was with requested that they remove the charge for 2x drinks as we had not been able to drink them and this was taken off. The worker acted as though he was doing us a favour and gave us a 10% discount however, we later saw that this is the case for all takeouts so they didn’t actually do us any kind of a favour.
After we got to our hotel, we had the food which was disgusting and inedible. We ordered a lamb curry which was rock solid and didn’t appear as though it had been cooked properly. The naan was sickly sweet and not the correct texture of a naan. We ended up binning the food so our money went down the toilet, literally.
Despite the workers encouraging us to order 2 more curries, the food we had originally ordered was more than enough for 5 adults and 2 children.
Throughout the night, all 7 of us were violently ill and sick, even the young children, from the food. We all felt so unwell and were unable to leave the hotel all day. We attribute this to the food as we had only eaten sandwiches from a local bakery that day which were very delicious and fresh. It was definitely the food because in hindsight, how can you cook a lamb curry in 10 minutes?
In summary, we were appalled and disgusted by our treatment and by the food. There was nothing to state there was a minimum number of items to order and even when we complied with this and ordered more, we were ignored and thrown out!
The workers were also very creepy and kept asking very personal and rude questions. As young women, we felt very uncomfortable with this and tried to ignore them. Not only was the food subpar but so were the workers and the service.
From reading other reviews, it appears that they do not take well to people who don’t order a lot of food or people who dine alone. I would not recommend this restaurant to any families or people with...
Read moreWhilst the restaurant location was decent - I cannot say the same about the quality and taste of food. Lakeland Spice is just another so called Indian restaurant that is actually serving a totally different type of cuisine. The food we experienced here on 24 Aug 2017 was anything but Indian. The main courses were just bland and not even properly cooked for one of the chicken dishes. Chapati was made using plain white flour instead of real wheat flour. Just awful and revolting.
Truth be told, like thousands of other 'Indian' restaurants and curry houses around the UK, the food served here is predominantly of Bangladeshi or Bengali origin. These flavours are run of the mill and nothing like true Indian food. If you truly wish to experience Indian food, I suggest you look elsewhere. Being one of the only 'Indian' restaurants around, their prices were definitely on the higher side and almost comparable to London prices.
PS* There is no truly authentic Indian restaurant in Keswick region - I did look around.
Furthermore, I have concerns regarding the hygiene of this restaurant. At any given point, there were 6-7 flies constantly hovering around a certain spot on the ceiling. Occasionally few of them swerved down to the tables and annoyed the hell out of me and seriously ran the chances of contaminating the food. I highlighted this to the staff and they didn't seem too bothered.
Lakeland Spice is centrally located but the only way they can succeed is by changing their chef and adapting their menu to proper...
Read moreRang up Lakeland Spice Cuisine on Saturday night to book a table for Sunday and got a table for a suitable time. Arrived on Sunday and was pleased with the reception and table, staff were very nice and the decor was pretty good as well. Waiter who took our order was very, very good and listened attentively and gave a suggestion or two which we certainly did not regret going with later. All the staff were very pleasant and efficient throughout.
The food was exceptional. We have gone to the Lakes five times in the last eight years and been as far south as Barrow in Furness and generally eat at an Indian restaurant a night or two out of the four or five we have and we generally have fairly low expectations but we were completely blown away by the quality of the food; we always ask for extra spicy and all the other restaurants just pile in the spices as an after thought destroying the taste of the curry and all your left with is the spice, but no such issues here. The curry was properly made and you could actually taste all the various flavours etc as it should be. The Naan breads were decent sized and very tasty (the Keema naan had actual Keema in, rather than whatever rubbish most places put in) and the rice be it plain or Pilau were very well cooked. To top it all off, the price was very reasonable as well.
We were so pleased with our meal that we booked another table for the following evening and will definitely be going back if we end up in the...
