Ah, the Dog & Gun – or as I now fondly refer to it, The Mutt & Blunder.
We entered with high hopes and left questioning every life decision that brought us to that moment. The atmosphere? Imagine if a motorway service station and a prison waiting room had a baby – and that baby took up smoking.
The clientele had a certain… flair. Think: lads who think deodorant is a government conspiracy and women who look like they’ve just thrown a kebab at someone. One woman at the bar was aggressively yelling into her cellphone about punching her coworker after being fired.
The staff were as enthusiastic as tax auditors during a power cut. We approached the bar with the energy of hungry pilgrims; they responded with the blank stare of people who’ve truly seen things. At one point I wasn’t sure if I was ordering a drink or interrupting their existential crisis.
Now, the food. Oh, the culinary masterpiece that was the roast dinner. When it arrived, I was thrilled to see it came pre-packaged, still clinging proudly to the clingfilm that surely added a hint of plastic to the flavour profile. A bold choice. The meat had the consistency of damp cardboard, and the vegetables tasted like they’d lost the will to live sometime around 2022. I’m 90% sure the Yorkshire pudding was just a reheated coaster.
To sum it up: if you enjoy sad microwaved food, ambiance that screams “this pub has definitely seen a fistfight over darts”, and a staff team that appears to be in witness protection, this is the place for you.
Otherwise, run. Run like your roast still had clingfilm on it.

Read moreI have given 1 star as I have to, if it was up to me, I would give zero. We visited Keswick yesterday with my husband, 2 children and our dog, and saw that The Dog and Gun had quite a few good reviews and was dog friendly. We went inside and stood in the doorway as there was no where else to stand. A couple said they were leaving and we could have their table. An extremely rude member of staff, making no eye contact or suggesting an alternative, said "You can't stand in the doorway" and then walked off. The couple got up and offered the table to us, and this rude member of staff, with her back towards us, pushed in front of us and told another couple to sit at the table. This couple had been sitting at another table when we arrived and had we known they were waiting we would have said to the kind couple that they were waiting. The rude waitress, again making no eye contact, said "There is a table here" to which I replied "sorry I can't sit there because of my hip" (tall stools and table, plus I don't think they are safe for my children). She said nothing, tutted, rolled her eyes and walked off. We did not stay, as we are not willing to pay for food and drinks in a place that the staff can not afford manners. Reading other reviews, it seems that rude staff members are the norm here. Maybe management need to recognise this and do some customer service training. Safe to say, we will not be returning and will not be...
Read moreUnfortunately a very poor experience due to a rude staff member. Upon arriving at 11am and sitting outside the pub was still closed. A member of staff pushed the back door into one of our groups backs and shouted don't block the fire exit. I understand fire exits needing to be kept clear at all times however the fire exit was only blocked due to the pubs layout of tables and the member of staff could have been more polite. We decided to simple move the table slightly and ignore the rudeness. We asked another member of staff when the pub opens and they said in 10 minutes, so we waited 10 minutes then ordered food and drink to the table as we had young children and dogs so wanted to stay outside. The same member of staff again opened the back door and shouted at us have you ordered food online, the kitchen doesn't one till 12 you'll have to wait then slammed the door before we could respond. One of our group went inside to speak to the member of staff and he spoke rudely to them aswell did not take responsibility and blamed head office (typical). He did provide a refund however after he left the pub another member of our group leaving the restrooms, heard the same member of staff bad-mouthing our group. I would recommend some customer service training for this...
