We dropped into this lovely pub after a visit to Mother Shiptons Cave and we are so pleased we did.
2 adults, 2 kids (10 & 12) and a dog. Do not be misled by what seems to be a 'normal' pub menu. The food is gorgeous. Our girls decided on the fish finger sandwich and chips, my husband had fish of the day (haddock) and I had the chicken with parmesan chips and veg. There was silence as we ate other than appreciative noises. The girls' "fish fingers" were home made fish goujons, battered, and in a toasted, buttered brioche bun, with a bucket of chunky, home-made chips. They absolutely loved every mouthful. Hubby said the same for his fish and OMG my chicken was fab. Served with a crispy skin, crispy ham and the most amazing bacon jam, I just didn't want it to end.
We added on desert - ice cream for the girls, cheesecake of the day (Biscoff) for hubby and warm almond and raspberry tart for me. Again, just delicious.
The gentleman (I'm presuming owner/manager) and all the girls behind the bar were also very friendly and welcoming. The building has lots of cosy seating areas and a gorgeous beer garden overlooking the water.
Well worth a visit if you are...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAs we were staying overnight in the town we wanted to eat somewhere local and independent - this pub suited us to the ground. After walking from our accommodation along the lovely riverside path (after the crowds had gone!) we had a look at the pub and were a little disappointed as not only did it look in need of some TLC but it was also up for sale.....
However, once inside we were made to feel very welcome by the young but professional bar staff who took our orders for food (2 roast beef and 2 roast pork, Sunday lunches). The food was served very quickly and it was piled up on the plate! Not only was there lots of it but it was really well cooked, veggies were spot on, meats were melt in the mouth and the gravy was as it should be. Prices for drinks and food were very reasonable for such a busy tourist area. I appreciate the pub is up for sale but a few hanging baskets / flowers outside would really lift the ambiance of the place to make it that little bit better?
Thoroughly recommendation this great characterful old pub to anyone visiting this area but best to book to avoid...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreCame her a couple of times during a stay in the area with family back in September. The atmosphere was relaxing on our first visit for drinks where they had a good range of gins to choose from. During our second visit the food was amazing I had the prawns to start, and the pesto pasta for main. My sister had the dirty knicker bokker glory and it looked incredible. Very big dessert as you can see so would advice not eating too much beforehand if you wanted to order this.
Staff were also chatty, very helpful, and continuously asking if we wanted anymore drinks.
Only disappointing thing about the evening was we could hear a local being quite rude about one of our 3 dogs who was barking a little, even though she could have gone in the other room where dogs arenāt allowed. Apart from that would definitely visit again if I found myself in the area...
