We've had some great experiences at this bar and hotel. It's normally our "go to" place when we're in St. Ives. So I booked a table here for valentine's.
When we arrived the member of staff at the door said we had no booking. Instead of being accommodating, he asked me if we'd booked on the right day. I found the booking confirmation in my emails, showing them it was their mistake not mine. No apologies. They then quickly managed to find us a table, even though he looked at me blankly when he thought we hadn't booked.
The valentine's specials menu had nothing vegan on it at all even though other years they'd been a good selection. There was only one choice of starter we could eat, but the waitress said my wife could have the ravioli. They would just take the parmesan off and it'll be vegan.
I asked her to check if the ravioli had egg in the pasta and she came back and told me that it did so even if you took the parmesan off it still would not be vegan.
I had lost faith that this waitress knew what she was talking about so I asked her to make sure that the starter, the soup, would definitely be vegan as it was the only thing we could eat and she assured us that it would.
Even after checking with her twice it still came out wrong.
All we wanted was a nice relaxing evening out and unfortunately due to staff incompetence it was just a very stressful experience, We would have been better off going to wetherspoons.
On the upside the drinks were paid for by the manager and she did say that they would retrain the staff but that doesn't help...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThere is no doubt that the refurbishment is stunning. Thank goodness that the glass has been replaced, maximising the stunning views. We enjoyed drinks here several times during our recent holiday and was always lucky to get a seat with a view (they are still at a premium, but a much improved area. Well done). ||The bar area has been moved behind a couple of pillars making the area very cramped. On our first visit it was chaotic with only one person seemingly serving. There were plenty of staff but most seem content to walk up and down the bar having laughs and flirting with each other, only begrudging serving when lots of customers are waiting.||Seats in front of the bar are high tables, all with reserved signs with nobody sat at them. Either decide if these tables are for drinkers or diners. I'd suggest the former unless you want queues for the bar to build around people trying to enjoy a meal.||Ran out of lager on one visit and a limited wine choice. Probably just teething issues but for a brewey pub to run out of lager?? Criminal. This just added to the chaos with people deciding what to drink. Drink prices have inevitably gone up since our visit at Christmas. We expected this.||Please get rid of the rugs. They are a trip hazard and detract from the new look and feel.||It really is all about the view. 10 out of 10 there. Overall we really enjoyed our multiple visits for drinks. We will come back...

Communal areas made the very best of the views and were furnished with a range of comfortable chairs, and art works highlighted its history and that of St Ives. Especially loved the strategically placed pot plants which added style to the overall impression.|Breakfasts were good although there were a few hiccups as the newly appointed staff got into the swing of things. |Our room had the best views and again was beautifully presented. However, sometimes style was at the expense of practicality, and more drawer/storage space would have been helpful, especially if staying for a week or longer. The door of the small toilet opened straight onto the glass end of the huge walk-in shower which could be a safety issue.|We were there after it had only been opened a few days so of course there were some snags but whenever anything was raised, the response was immediate, cordial and quickly resolved. It must be acknowledged that the staff had limited time to acquaint themselves with all the new systems etc, but without exception they were all wonderful. Helpful, good sense of humour and appeared genuinely interested in their guests. Special mention must be made of Head Receptionist Sue, Luke and the Assistant General Manager whose name we did not get. I hope St Austell Brewery recognise what an asset they have in all...
