I arrived at Porters Coffee shop looking for refreshments and somewhere cool and relaxing to rest after 35 miles of a 55 mile bike ride round the York vale in 30°C+ heat. I was met by 3 lovely smiling and cheerful ladies who immediately made me feel very welcome. I chose cream tea and 2 bottles of fruit juice to which they provided 2 glasses full with ice. I sat myself down in their lovely courtyard which was shaded and cool. It was very picturesque and had a lovely sommery atmosphere to it. My cream tea came within 5 minutes and was absolutely delicious. Home baked fruit Scone, fresh clotted cream and locally sourced jam. I sat down and rested listening to radio 4 that was playing classical music. What better way to spend a half hour recovering from an extremely hard bike ride. The ladies were polite and chatty not just with me but to all the other guests. The Coffee shop inside was just as idyllic as it was outside, tastefully put together with lots of character. I would recommend Porters Coffee shop to any poor soul cyclist or to anyone else for...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreTypical tea room vibe, cosy fire, lovely staff, lots of cakes, good coffee and a very wide range of good quality tea. They even sell ayurvedic tea! They offer almond milk too which is a better plant-based option to the usual soya. The only downsides are: the loo. There's only one, tucked under the stairs, out the back, so sometimes a queue, and the seating. I can't put my finger on why the seating doesn't work but unless you manage to get one of the three sofa's or the window seat, you are likely to get knocked by people walking to the loo or coming in and out - you'll see what I mean. If you get a sofa then you will be very comfortable. I've not tried the savoury options but the cakes here look lovely but are too way sweet for me. I don't think they are made onsite. There's a good mix of locals and visitors in here, a fire in the colder months, newspapers and the option to take away. It's...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe popped into Helmsley on Sunday 7th July looking to have a lovely cream tea, the weather had turned to rain so we went into porters coffee shop. As we walked toward a table a woman behind the counter barked across to us that we order at the counter, this took me back a little but decided maybe she was busy as it was quite full. I went to order our food and thought I might have a nice sandwich so asked what choices she had and again I got the answer shouted across to look behind me in the cabinet!!! Decided I would just have a cream tea the same as my husband. When it arrived it was very dry, as if it was stale, the pot of tea was quite large but after we poured one, that was it....... only half full. Definitely won't be...
