Thus pub is a grown up pub , no students no families just older people out for a pleasant time . It's calm and cool on the inside with an older worldly feel , and outside is a large seating area that's pleasant with flowers but not over the top . There is no food I believe but a good choice of lagers , real ales and lots of ciders - and the prices are very reasonable as its so close to town . The owners ALWAYS come across as very professional and polite - and on certain nights they even throw on a live band - I've see the signs but not actually been . For many years I drank in the Brigadier Gérard a Sam's Smiths pub just up the road but all the rules in there are ridiculous- so if you want to find a hidden gem where you can have a pleasant time with your friends - the The Black Horse on Monkgate is...

Well run pub with a good variety of drafts and awesome and helpful staff. They do loads of live music which I appreciate. They don't serve food but they offer a variety of yummy pork pies. I just wish they heated them up before serving.

The clientelle is actual normal people. No drunkens nor loud nor rude people. Just a nice community.

The beer garden is lovely with plantpots, new furniture and a covered area for rainy weather.

All in all a nice pub where I've met loads...

I was fortunate enough to drop by this bar when I heard one of my friends was playing alongside the band booked for tonight (I believe it was Acko Pulco) Frankly, I'm impressed with the bar and the sound system was great as everything was crisp and clear at a reasonable volume level. Now that's a big deal! Loud enough to enjoy and groove to but just right to prevent severe hearing lost.

Overall, a hell of a lot better than The White Horse...
