The Cornish Hen Deli — Restaurant in England

Having visited here for years when you used to be able to sit inside for coffee and enjoyed delicious eat in and takeaway fare from here before, we were looking forwards to calling in again during our trip to Penzance. We entered and walked towards the counter and began to browse. We weren't acknowledged but then realised the man was in the middle of serving a lady who had wandered away from the counter but then returned and kept adding more to her order. We had decided what we wanted from the counter ourselves and were happy to wait patiently behind the customer being served. A few minutes passed by. My partner is 6ft tall and we were both clearly visible to the assistant. As the customer was finishing paying we stepped aside to make way for her to leave, ready to place our order. Another female customer had just entered the store and walked straight to the counter pushing in front of us and the assistant just started serving her, totally ignoring us and the fact that we had been there several minutes. Came to the shop on Saturday and bought quite a few things. The place seemed to be manned by two very hungover youngsters. The girl behind the counter put everything in a bag but unfortunately when we got home, we realised she had forgotten to pack the piece of cheese we had bought. We also bought a piece of polenta cake to take away and I’m not kidding, it was the smallest piece of cake I’ve ever been given in a shop. My mum and I literally fell about laughing when we unwrapped it. £30 not particularly well spent I’m afraid! Shame as have been here before and usually it is busy...

It’s all too easy to overlook the Cornish Hen. It’s been around for years, quietly serving deli goods alongside baked goods and coffee. Very solid lunch offering. Had a salad box and savoury tart to go and was very impressed by portion size. I was expecting the usual box with a few leaves and a tart on top, but had the choice of various toppings from the deli counter to fill the box, and the tart (one of three to choose from) was separate.
