There is a lot of hype regarding this pool and unfortunately it doesn't live up to it. There are no indoor changing rooms or showers. The changing rooms are outdoor stone cubicles, half have doors, half don't. There's rusty water dripping from the ceilings of the changing rooms. There are no hooks in the changing rooms, and they are very dirty, hair and debris trapped in the rough concrete floor. There are only 2 showers with weak pressure and luke warm temp, these are also outdoor stone cubicles with no doors. The pool is quite small and shallow. The floor and walls of the pool are a very rough concrete that catches on your swimsuit. When you look at the floor you can see what looks like streaks of paint, as though it use to have a smooth coating that's worn off. The pool was nice and hot on entry coming from cold air, but every minute you spent in there felt colder, as though you've been in the bath for a while and it's not hot anymore. I was expecting a lot hotter temps for geothermal, I have hotter baths at home. The water was extremely salty so its quite buoyant, it will also tarnish silver jewellery, so don't wear your jewellery in there. They had also added chlorine to the pool, which isn't want you want in a geothermal pool, salt is adequate enough in an outdoor pool. The chlorine vapours affected me, and it's all I could smell all day. They had booked a lot of people into the pool, must have been at least 15 and it was too many. Everyone was trying to swim because it wasn't hot enough to just sit around, which was too difficult because of the size and depth of the pool and amount of people in it. We have miles of perfect wild swimming beaches, the majority of the lido is reserved for cold water swimming which is pointless, I would have made the entire lido geothermal. I didn't feel very clean after leaving the site. It's very run down and needs a huge amount of money putting into it....
Read moreIt grieves me to say this, but there's no other way of describing my experience at the geothermal pool: disappointing. It was a windy late October afternoon so I didn't try the main pool, which could well be lovely - it certainly looks beautiful, but there was nobody in it. Everyone was in the geothermal pool, which has to be pre-booked. I was excited about visiting an outdoor geothermally heated pool, and was expecting something a bit like a rotenburo in Japan - also outdoors, also heated by geothermal springs. The pool was outdoors, but there the resemblance ended. The changing rooms were also outdoors, in full view of the pool, and mostly without doors. There was nowhere to put your stuff other than in one of the open changing rooms or on a bit of wet poolside equipment. Outdoor shoes everywhere. As for the water itself, it was just about tepid. What really shocked me was that it contained so much chlorine that my skin began to sting the instant I got in, and after 25 minutes bobbing about in the crowd trying to stay warm and breathing in the chemical fumes, I decided to exit early. The advice is that you should get out often in order to cool down. That was definitely not a problem. The most pleasurable part of the whole experience was getting dry and dressed, and hot chocolate in the cafe, which was delicious. Staff were all very friendly and helpful but unless you enjoy soaking in lukewarm disinfectant I honestly couldn't...
Read moreIt's a nice lido with plenty of space to lay out. It's a nice size pool with a smaller toddler pool in the corner.
There are loads of changing rooms around the edges but they have no doors. Convenient but not 100% private. I guess they are also shady places to suit out of the sun too.
I'm not a local and I am not aware of what the cafe was like before the refurb. I'm sure the latest incarnation is much improved. However...
After just 30 minutes of opening the were no croissants left. Surely they should have a supply through the morning, instead of 4 or 5 for the first who arrive.
No cream or marshmallows for the kids' hot chocolate. The service this morning was painfully slow, even with two or three people on it.
No ice creams served today because "the girl who serves then from the ice cream bicycle didn't turn up today." Is she the only person qualified to exchange an ice cream for some money??
Overall this place is ok and a fun day out, if this is your thing. Deck chair hire is reasonable too at just £2 each.
Ok, I'm not that desperate for an ice cream, not cream on a hot chocolate but at least be in a position to offer weekdays on the menu.
The main thing that let the lido down today is the cafe - queues were long and service was slow. Not because it was really busy but just frustratingly slow service.
Pool...
