The second we sat down, a waitress asked for our order, we explained we hadn’t seen the menu yet and asked her to come back ‘in a minute’. We were then ignored for 20mins despite clearly being finished with the menu. We ordered 2 pizzas.

When we asked after 45mins for an ETA on the pizzas we were told “sorry you should have been told there’d be a big wait” (note there were only 2 other tables without food when we ordered). After another 15mins we asked for our pizzas to be put in takeaway boxes when they were ready as we needed to get back to parking After another 15 a different waitress told me the pizzas were “being boxed up now”..I saw two pizzas being boxed up..but these were for a delivery. After another 15mins we got the pizzas which were nice but not nice enough to make up for the service.

There was only one person cooking pizzas and I could see he had to stretch dough, prep, cook and take them to tables by himself - definitely understaffed and not his fault. I recommend management look into this.

Overall: massive wait and very disorganised service Won’t...

A great range of beers for those who are into craft ales. Relaxing atmosphere for mid week lunch. Very popular in the evenings and weekends here so arrive early! Fossgate can get quite busy at peak times. The food is basically pizza..or pizza! It would be nice to see a few more options on the menu - a simple pasta dish or two, a burger, but the pizza we chose was particularly delicious and well done to the traditional Italian style. You can get skin on fries or sweet potato fries as well, both options were yummy. Staff were helpful on request though they didn't plug good or offer a menu on arrival - the products we did sample were well worthy of upselling, but while they weren't doing that they were very genial and did create a chilled out atmosphere, and were very approachable! I would like to see them do away with the disposable bowls and cardboard 'pizza plate' is a shame to be using disposables and adding to waste in this day and age so I definitely minus a star off for that. Nevertheless, I would like to make a return visit to sample another beer or two in the...

When I visited The Hop, it had only been open for 4 days so everything was still neat and tidy as expected. I found it an interesting place really; the front half being more of a traditional pub experience and the rear half being a spacious pizzeria/seating area with a large skylight and paintings on the wall. It was a pleasant place to sit with friends and sample the beer and food on offer. The strange thing was that I found myself forgetting after a while that we were sitting in a pub on Fossgate.

Speaking of the beer, I found the selection to be excellent (primarily Ossett Brewery ales) and to my tastes. Food wise, they seem to be keeping things simple as the only thing on the menu are wood-fired pizzas (you can see the wood oven from your table). Limited selection is not necessarily a bad thing though as it often means that what you do get is of a higher quality. I'd say that was my experience of the pizzas as they were very tasty. Not the cheapest pizzas you'll find but not too expensive either.

Overall, I enjoyed The Hop and definitely think I will...

It's spacious, quiet and has a good beer selection. That's about it. The pizza is woeful, there are better offerings in town, but even by pub pizza standards it's got to be up there with some of the worst I've had. Cheese heavy, undercooked, and lacked any flavour. Beer is fine, got a lot of Salt and Osset Brewery stuff, but one of our glasses was dirty and after getting a new one, the barman just poured the drink from the dirty glass into the clean one - it's the equivalent of picking food up that fell on the floor and putting it on a clean plate. I'd come for a pint if I just wanted somewhere to have something hazy and fizzy, but again, plenty better options on this buzzing street.

Visited on the evening of 17/07/22. Whoever was in charge of the playlist here was nothing short of a musical genius. The large main room was kept at a lovely comfortable temperature, despite the heatwave outside. The Pizza I had was by far the greatest Pizza I have ever had, and that is no word of a lie. (I've had a lot of Pizzas). Even when we couldn't finish our Pizza, they provided awesome takeout boxes for us. What I also liked was that the plates the Pizzas were served on were Compostable and Biodegradable. It's good to see environmental awareness in this industry. I would highly recommend this establishment and I am glad that we stumbled upon it when we did.
