If you plan to visit on a weekend, be prepared to queue! This isn’t the reason for my 2 stars, just a warning.
Came here as a solo traveller a few weekends ago, was pretty sorely disappointed compared to the reviews I’d seen.
The iced matcha latte was very average, the staff were so obviously upselling items rather than being genuine that it just ruined the feel. Food took maybe half an hour to arrive, which I understand because it’s busy, but is a bit ouch with the price point. I’ve honestly had better tasting and cheaper brunches in London from independent businesses, for reference, so I'd expect better service here. Not sure what this price inflation in York is about. Either way, food was tasty enough, and presentation was fantastic, I would give 3.75 stars out of 5, although will warn the avocado has a lemon flavour for those who don’t like that which isn’t listed. They hadn’t cut or mashed my avocado properly either, it was just in chunks, so seemed rushed.
Also one of the staff members was walking around in tiny gym shorts, and then bending over to clear the table next to me with their behind right over me which was so awkward and I’m usually very pro- people wearing what they like. I get the idea of independent businesses being lax on dress code, but having your backside in customers faces is a bit far (I’ve worked in hospitality, so coming from a pretty informed place).
Towards the end, I left the table to go up and grab a menu to order something else (so busy it was a nightmare to grab a member of staff) and when I came back, they had cleared my entire table within 2 minutes, despite there clearly being a whole bowl of food there, they did not bother to ask any other members of staff if I had gone or not. Efficient, sure, but not great for someone on their own and totally embarrassing, especially since they'd offered to give me a takeaway box for food they'd now cleared.
Really ruined the experience for me, I left clean after that and wouldnt go back unless they improved...
Read moreI'd heard many good things from my girlfriend about Rise before we eventually visited for a takeaway brunch.
And the reason we had to grab a takeaway brunch is because the inside of the place is always rammed!
Every time I walk down Fossgate, there's a queue of people waiting for a table all the way down the street.
Fortunately, though, you can make an order on their website/app. I'm actually not sure whether it's a website or an app. In truth, my girlfriend did the ordering.
However, when we went to collect our order, the process was very quick and simple.
Naturally, the food would have been better had it been "fresher" and not travelled as far. But even so, I was impressed with what I had.
I ordered a mushroom eggs benedict, and all things considered, I don't think it could have been any better.
The eggs were cooked perfectly. The Hollandaise sauce was exceptional. The mushrooms were wonderfully seasoned. And the toasted sourdough was stodgy and dense, having absorbed the Hollandaise sauce and the juices from the mushrooms.
The only criticism I could offer is that there wasn't enough of it!
I would like to dine in if I were to visit Rise again. Although, with it having become so popular on social media, many of the clientèle fall into the category of wannabe "influencers."
Whilst there's nothing wrong with wanting to be an influencer, you do end up giving off a disingenuous air of someone trying too hard.
And though this isn't something that Rise can control (I wouldn't fault them for it for a moment), it does make me think twice about going in and having to be around said clientèle.
Overall, I would recommend a visit, and I do want to return there myself. Although, I would make an effort to go on a quieter day when you can get a table (and when the people at the next table aren't...
Read moreYour classic instagram hipster chic brunch place. This is Urban Outfitters if they slapped ridiculously high prices on food as opposed to fast fashion. The food is quite enjoyable, particularly the steak and eggs. However, the portion sizes can be quite large for breakfast/lunch. This is likely why the prices are so high for simply... brunch. I've visited a couple of times but I think my most recent visit will be my last. I've shrugged off the prices in the past as it's a treat, but when brunch is around £40 for the both of us, I cannot simply justify that. Ordering at the counter is awful also, most other businesses take your order at the table or have scannable qr codes for table service. Instead, you're cramped up on a table with strangers then you have to awkwardly get out of said table (which is a squeeze) then squeeze over to the counter. If i'm paying £40, I'd want a bit of a better experience in all honesty. i've paid the same price at actual restaurants that serve main course meals, so just find it slightly unjustifiable. The 'f betty's' straw was also a bit strange? You're both offering overpriced food and drink but at least betty's delivers a...
