I decided on my last trip to York, I'd swing by Spring next time I was in the city and actually get brunch - today was that time. On a reasonably busy Tuesday in February, myself and a friend rocked up to Spring for something light and quick. I opted for the Eggs Benedict and she went for the Soup of the Day. Eggs Benedict comes with two poached eggs on top of an English muffin with ham, hollandaise and garnish. I really hoped to be adding this to my 'you need to go here' list, but unfortunately my choice today doesn't quite get it there. The bacon (swapped instead of ham at my request and no extra cost, a nice touch) was crisp around the edge and tender across the rest. The hollandaise was creamy and had a nice flavour, not too overpowering and definitely added to the dish. However unfortunately the eggs themselves were overcooked, probably only by tens of seconds, but ultimately that resulted in almost fully set yolks which turned the eggs into a far drier affair than they should've been. With the number of dishes they offer explicitly stating poached eggs, this needs to be addressed for me. The flavour was there, but the texture and creaminess in the dish came solely from the hollandaise and that is a shame. My friend had the soup of the day and was really chuffed with her choice. It came with sourdough and butter. It looked and smelt the business. Coffee was pretty good, but came far too soon to have in tandem with our food. I don't often think much on service times, but my friend pointed out that we'd been waiting a while and looking back, it feels like we were. A bustling little brunch spot that maybe I caught on a rough one, I'd love to return and see it improved on what we had today, but it's hard to justify giving it a second chance over the other variety of businesses in York. It was ok for us, but it's hard to say any more than that.

I’m definitely adding Spring Espresso to my preferred list of places for coffee/ lunch when I visit York. It’s a good size with plenty of seating and different table sizes across 2 areas, one of which is a step up. Choose a table then order at the counter. There’s a very tasty looking menu with quite a lot of egg dishes but it was too early for lunch so I just ordered an Americano and a piece of millionaire shortbread. My order arrived quickly. I asked for oatmilk on the side and was pleased to get a really good amount. The shortbread was delicious; probably the best I’ve eaten anywhere, a very light base, creamy caramel and quality chocolate topping. The cafe was busy but there was plenty of room for more; customers were across the age range and included people working in laptops. Toilet facilities are on the raised level and tucked away. I will definitely be visiting again!

We came to this café on a Sunday morning for breakfast with my girlfriend.

Unfortunately, the person who took our order was extremely rude and dismissive. When I went up to place the order, I started with the food and then tried to continue with the drinks — but he abruptly stopped me and demanded to know the table number. I tried to explain where we were sitting, but he wouldn’t listen and said, with an attitude, “I can’t continue — you always have to give the number first,” in a very unwelcoming tone. It felt unnecessarily harsh and made me uncomfortable. I also noticed he was speaking rudely to the waitresses, which added to the unpleasant atmosphere. For a moment, I genuinely considered cancelling the order and leaving just because of his behavior.

That said, the chef who prepared the food was very kind, and the eggs on toast were quite well done — I was happy with the food itself.

However, the rudeness of the person taking the order and making the coffee completely ruined the overall experience for us.

I don’t believe I’m alone in feeling this way, and I sincerely hope the management takes this feedback seriously and...

4 of us for breakfast/brunch.

Pancakes themselves were good, and very tasty, but would you consider making an option for a smaller portion size and reduce cost down accordingly from £9.50 price tag? This may make a nice addition to the menu.

Chef's poached eggs, were hard cooked in the middle, there was zero runny yolk. Sourdough toast part was nice.

Service itself was very slow, had to find our own menus to provide to our table, waiting to order was slow and another 25 minutes to wait for food to be delivered to us. The tea and coffee we ordered arrived about 5-8 minutes after ordering and was drunk and cold long before any food arrived. Had high hopes, for a lovely breakfast, It almost was....

sorry Spring Espresso, your exterior and menu was so promising...sadly you need to up your game on the poached eggs and portion size options on this one.

We paid £48.20 for 3 x pancakes, 1 x poached eggs on toast, 2 x OJ (admittedly fresh and decent portion), 1 flat...
