I ate at Mumbai last night and I have to say it was one of the worst experiences I have had in a really long time. We had booked a table at 7pm but arrived 10 minutes which was fine, we were seated at a drafty table by the stairs.
The waiter came over every 5 minutes asking if we were ready to order and each time we said no he looked at us like we had ruined his whole life. You know the look, like we were incompetent fools who didn’t know the rules. I asked for my king prawn garlic chilli to be saucy as I like my curry’s to have a lot of sauce, the waiter said that was fine and he’d tell the chef. I was so disappointed when it came, it had about 2 table spoons of sauce over 3 very rubbery prawns.
Unfortunately no one came to ask if our meals were ok until about half an hour later by which time it was cold and irredeemable. I left 2 of the prawns because they were inedible, the dish was £18 - expensive prawn I had! Despite the lies written below - I did not polish everything off. I left 2 prawns and also 2/3rds of my naan - which happened to be the nicest part of the meal. But I felt sick after eating the toughest prawn in the history of all tough prawns. I don’t doubt it was good quality but after the chef was done with it, it was like chewing Barbies leg. Perhaps they both bounced off my plate and your waiting staff presumed I ate them.
The whole night the staff treated us like we were an annoyance, to be got in and out as quickly as possible. There was no niceties or calmness. The whole thing was unpleasant from start to finish. The bill came to over £80 for 4 drinks, 2 mains, 3 sundries and popadoms. The service and food were awful and I will never go there again. There are too many good places. McDonald’s would have been better. I have been there about 5 times in the past and it was totally different, I don’t know if there’s new management or what but it was just dreadful.
The feedback from the owner tells you everything you need to know, they don’t care if I/you enjoy your food or even if you’ll come back, they want you in and out as quickly as possible and they want your money. No apology, no nothing. There are too many decent places with decent owners, staff and chefs. Mumbai Lounge is not one...
Read moreHave been a number of times and the food is always delicious. Unfortunately on this occasion, although the food was good, the service was terrible. When one waiter was asked to offer a recommendation he said he only took drinks orders and didn’t know the food menu but the waiter who came to take our order would be able to help us. Although it didn’t sound great when he said he didn’t know the menu, we understood that he was responsible for taking drinks orders. We then asked the waiter who came to take our food order for help. He told us he could not help us because some people like hot food, some medium and some mild. I went on to say that I liked medium heat food but he repeated he couldn’t help us because everyone one likes different things. This is the first time this has happened. I have found previously when eating at Indian restaurants that the waiters are able to recommend dishes based on how spicy you like things and which meat you are wanting. It just wasn’t very friendly service and has put me off going back. We ordered an a drink which never came and had to reorder it. We were then over charged for this drink, which just added to a bad experience. On a side note the table next to us ordered a prawn curry for £18. When it came there were only 3 prawns in it! They complained but were told that’s how it came. It was just a very...
Read moreWaited over an hour and a half for our food. Our table was booked for 8:30pm and we received our food at 10pm with each item coming to our table separately. My curry being brought 10 minutes before i had reminded them i also ordered mushroom rice. The tables next to us were also complaining of the same wait time. Was charged for the 2 poppadoms and pickle tray that were put on our table at the start (making it seem as though they were complimentary). Was also charged £4.50 for a pint of Coke )which was poured out of a 2L bottle which sells in stores for approximately £2) although the menu states a Coke is £2.70! When I asked to speak to the manager I was told that the manager had said there was nothing that could be done. Upon leaving, I saw the owner and spoke to him. He said no staff member had spoken to him regarding us. The owner was sincere and refunded me some money.
In addition to this, I was quite shocked at the artwork on the wall. As a south asian woman myself I did not appreciate the over-sexualisation of the women depicted. I’ll add a photo of what I am referring to.
Now even if we ignored all this the food was at best mediocre. As a york resident, I was highly disappointed by the service. The tables near us were tourists and it was upsetting to hear the dismay they felt. Would not recommend...
