The Railway — Restaurant in England

Absolutely horrific. I don’t think I’ll have enough characters to write everything that went wrong in our visit. We waited 1hr and 30mins for food. And then when food did arrive, we had missing items and add-ons, and the final dish of the 5 we were expecting only just arrived as everyone else was finishing the first 4. Service from waitresses was bang average, nothing special which can be expected. But the kitchen staff should be embarrassed. Lack of preparation, and even worse timing. We overheard another table complaining about a 50 minute wait time, and the Sunday special deal had ended… at 3:30… on Sunday… can only assume this is because of them running out of something? Which again is poor prep and anticipation. embarrassing! Also might I add, when the 5th dish was missing and we asked where it was, the response was along the lines of “apologies, but we’ve actually ran out of turkey, we can offer you a chicken or beef replacement” okay… but surely this is something you’d ask when the order was first placed? Not as we’re expecting it?! And then of course we waited another 10+ mins extra for the chef to pull a chicken breast out the back of the fridge/freezer and cook it. The manager was actually a somewhat decent person and tried to help, he also refunded the Sunday dinner. But what about the other 4 dished that took 90 mins? Food was poor quality aswell, but at that point we didn’t really care, “toasted bun” was cremated, literally black. Hashbrown was soggy, portions were small but cheap so can’t be upset about that, could go on about food but won’t. The worst thing about this all, is that we came here last year and it was brilliant, and they were busier last year! Very disappointing. I work in hospitality aswell and can appreciate there will be a wait on food, but for that amount of time is inexcusable. I’ve also noticed that the owner takes great pride in trying to justify the poor reviews on here, I look forward to seeing what nonsense he comes up with for this one....

UPDATE 15/03/2025

We continue to use the Railway due to the meal prices. The daily offers are really good value. The toilets seem less dingy now too since my review last year. However, today there were lots of dogs in the pub. I thought they'd started doggy daycare it was that bad. We had 6 surrounding us from the 3 tables around us as we ate our food which wasn't pleasant especially as one repeatedly jumped up at me ( own 2 dogs myself so not anti pet). This policy needs to be addressed particularly when it's busy as it was this lunch time.

23/12/24 The pub continues to be cheap and cheerful although menu options have decreased along with portion sizes. The toilets are still awful though which is why I've downgraded to 4 stars

22/02/2023 The Railway continues to afford a wide range of drinks (alcoholic & soft) and food at good value prices. There's always a nice atmosphere inside and the service is friendly & quick.

03/05/2022 We've continued to use the pub weekly for a meal for the last six months and still find the food good and the staff friendly. The only negative aspect are the dingy toilets which can't be helped but are always clean.

We recently moved to the area and thought we'd pop in here for a drink. The pub was decorated lovely for Christmas, the interior was clean including the toilets and the atmosphere equally as pleasant plus the bar staff friendly. Alcoholic and soft drinks were cheaper than other pubs in the area and the menu had a good variety of meals to choose from which we'll be sampling on...

Returned after first visit, 05/10/23 won't ever be going back 😢 food and service awful. At first no one serving at the bar, stood there 10 minutes, not suprized only 2 staff for a packed pub. Lets get this straight definitely not the staffs fault. More concerned about the food returned the bar with mold on it from various customers. After 1 hour my food turned up, the worst food I have ever been presented with. Looked and tasted like it had been re frozen. Appeared to be mold present, left it not fit to eat. This is a chain not local pub, will soon be closing if you continue like this. Give your staff some support, so disappointed. 😢

Went for evening food here, very good. Parked on car park 2 minute walk was also free after 6pm. Lovely traditional Pub, clean and well presented. Staff were an absolute joy. Lots of seating inside and out. Gets very busy so expect a wait for your food, completely understandable considering how many people they were serving 😊Gammon Egg and chips with a pint £13 absolute bargin, cooked well good quality and fair sized portion, what more could you ask for.
